I would think that even if you have oil that is better at resisting breakdown, you still would want to change the oil filter every 3000 or so no matter what. I've run synth in every car I've owned since 1997 and I still always changed oil and filter around 3K.

Slightly off topic, but I just read on a porsche forum that their dealerships recommended 15k oil service intervals until recently when they went down to 10k! crazy!

They also hold a LOT more oil - almost 12 quarts for the turbo.

I'm running RP 5w30, changing at 4500 miles with subaru filters every time. I understand a lot of cars say its ok to go a long time (M3 is in the 10k mile range) but that is just stupid.

My O4 has 110,000 miles. I have used synthetic the entire time except for the break-in period. I use amsoil and change every 7500 miles(oops once at 8500). So far so good.

I have had oil changes all over the country with this car to include Hawaii, Cali and Florida. I heard the same confusing b.s.

That TSB you posted is highly interesting. It was trying to say that a catback will screw with the longevity of an engine's life.

Of course it does.

Anything you do to your engine affects longevity. From Subaru's perspective, anything aftermarket will cause the engine to operate outside of its designed parameters, leading to a potential increase in the likelihood of failure.

If you install a catback, and your engine blows for WHATEVER reason, it will be very easy for subaru to deny warranty. The catback caused exhaust pressure and flow characteristics that cause the engine to operate outside of its designed tolerances, leading to failure.

By the way, my dealer recommended that I use synthetic.

We have seen this a few times and nothing we could do for the customer. This is why I do not tell my customers to do extended drain intervals. 3750 mile oil changes.

I had a customer with a turbo Baja and they had a CEL and it turned out the cam timing was off. Something with a valve in the cylinder head that controls the valve timing and runs off oil pressure. Well it had a loss of oil pressure(possibly due to dirt in the oil or something) and that had changed causing the cel to come on. We changed the oil, no more CEL. The culprit? Customer using Amsoil and changing it every 15k miles.
Who changes their oil at every 15k?

I may not know much about mechanics but that person shouldn't own a car much less a subaru. They should be riding a bike. If I drive severely i change mine every 2500 mi. Otherwise i change it every 3700mi. Technically I could get away with 7500 ( assuming there wasn't any severe driving ). I remember reading it somewhere but it only applies to H4 engines.

I have a customer that did it with their Turbo Baja. They did it because Amsoil says they could.

We just replaced a Turbo on a Forester that failed due to lack of oil changes.

The STI does not come with Mobil 1 as a factory fill. Only these cars do,
  • Acura RDX
  • Aston Martin
  • All Bentley Vehicles
  • Cadillac CTS, CTS-V, Escalade, XLR, XLR-V, SRX, STS and STS-V
  • Chevrolet Corvette C6 and Z06
  • Chevrolet TrailBlazer SS
  • Chrysler 300C SRT-8
  • Cobalt SS S/C Coupe
  • Dodge Caliber SRT-4, Charger SRT-8, and Magnum SRT-8
  • Jeep Cherokee SRT-8
  • Mercedes-Benz AMG Vehicles
  • Mercedes SLR
  • Mitsubishi Evolution
  • Pontiac Solstice GXP
  • All Porsche Vehicles
  • Saturn Ion Red Line and Saturn Sky Red Line
  • Viper SRT-10
If it did, it would say it on the oil cap and in the owners manual.

How about those idiots that buy 5,000 mile oil, last time I checked they don't make a 5,000 mile oil filter????

If syn. oil is'nt good for our cars, or for that matter why should anyone use syn. oil. They offer full syn. oil changes at
my local Subaru dealership.

Mobil One, oil and tire manufactures give kick backs to car manufactures for using their name, goes in an EVO from the factory why not use syn. oil.

Actually Subaru Filters can go 7500 miles. Their normal service is 7500, but the severe service is 3750 depending on your driving styles and conditions. It is not the fact Synthetic is bad(I sell it if a customer wants it), but that people try and go longer than what they should because of Synthetic oils.
