Default Rotors need replacing

Ok so when I bought my car used with 46k from the dealer my brakes were making noise, but I figured it was just the pads on the brembos. Anyways about a month or 2 after I bought the car the brake pedal started vibrating. I let it go for awhile and I just took it in last week and they told me I need rotors all around. They told me that they were something like 1800 with labor and that they were not covered under warranty. Now here is the thing when I bought the car I bought an extended warranty with it. When I bought it I was told that it covered everything besides wearable parts. I was arguing with him over the phone and he told me that the rotors are not even covered under the factory warranty. I have not tracked my car or anything either so its not abuse or anything. Can anyone help me out I mean I paid 2 grand for the warranty so I don't want to pay for rotors if I don't have to. Thanks for any help guys.

You should be able to look at the written contract that is your extended warranty and see specifically what is covered and what is excluded.

In my opinion, brake pads and rotors are indeed wear items.

Keep in mind that you don't need to get the Brembo rotors from the dealer. You can find cheaper alternatives through the vendors on this web site and those alternatives are just as effective as the Brembos (i.e. DBA, Performance Friction, etc.).

Also, maybe your rotors can be turned rather than replaced; however with 46,000 miles on them, they may be near their wear minimums. If that's the case, replacement is your best bet.

You might also look at the classifieds on the site here and see if anyone has take-off's or low mileage rotors for sale.

Yea I would not buy the Brembos from them. I am looking for a takeoff set. I am going to try to find a hard copy of exactly what is and what is not covered.

it would be way cheaper to just buy aftermarket rotors and pads.

that sucks, sounds like you WISH you had them replace them before you bought it but they surely got you good. that sucks. you might want to get very mean with the dealership and try to have some work done or a discount on the service as this problem arose so soon after your purchase, maybe they will discount the parts or labor for you. yeah that $1800 estimate scared the hell out of my friend last year once he took his in for work, hahahaha, he sure left there in a hurry. but once you see how beefy big the STI rotors are, in hand, you will see why a dealer charges so much, they are not a high volume part either, but they are amazingly huge brakes YAY!

there are much less expensive options for parts AND you can do just the rotors or just the pads right now then in a few months or half a year you can replace the other part. if your rotors are warping theny ou should do them first. check the life left in the rotors and pads so you know what youre up against.

I am going to try and get takeoffs for a reasonable price.

rotors and pads are not covered under any warranty. Just like your tires.

Wrong. They are covered by Subaru's wear item warranty for 3/36k

I think I am going to let it go for a little while then do a total braking upgrade (pads, ss lines, and rotors) Atleast I got new rear struts and my rear window switch fixed.

I bought new drilled Brembos with gold anti-rust plating for about $800. They are easy to replace yourself. Try some Hawk HPS pads at the same time. Mine are in great shape after 31,000 miles.

You could try arguing the point that you just bought the car 2 months ago and the rotors are shot already. That's about the only chance you have of getting them covered. But like Blackfang said, the stock rotors are only covered up to 36K.

You could also have them turned which will give you a few more months of life allowing you to accumulate your pads, rotors, etc.

What do you mean by turned? How would I go about doing that? I am just going to buy aftermarket pads, lines and rotors at the same time, I just don't have the money right now. Its just annoying that the pedal shake when I apply the breaks. So if turning them may solve the problem for a little that would be great.

Turning would be having a dealership grind down the contact area of the rotor to remove any warping, assuming that the warping isn't too extreme.

I figured thats what it was, but I though it was called cutting. Id rather just buy new one then pay to fix the old ones temporarily.

Having your rotors cut doesn't cost too much and could give you the time you need to amass your parts. I spent $700 for pads and rotors 2 months ago and I got Stoptech Centric Posiquiet pads from TIC and DBA 4000 blank rotors from WRXBrakes. So add in lines and you're over $800.

You'll probably find out as I did that finding blank rotors is gonna be hard. There are a ton of companies making cross-drilled and slotted rotors.
