IWSTI Addict since: Dec 2006 Trader Rating: (0) | Hi guys, at first: if a german car is tested in germany, a german car have to win...same old story. in the first vid, the only reason for comparison, is the boxer engine with his nice grumbling sound. Tim Schrick (the driver) says, that the porsche can do everything better, but NOT twice better, because the STI only half the price of a porsche (I think you know what I mean). But Tim says (all the subaru-guys here in germany has been very astonished), that the subaru is a great car, which causes a lot of fun (only the steering could be made better)...for a german TV-broadcast a very good one. Second Vid: comparing the two sedans...hmm, in germany we call it "prollig", you guys would say "rice", a dentist (or any other doctor) could only drive a audi (because of rice-looking), all other guys can drive this "rice-car" and they will have a lot of fun with it PS: sorry, english isn´t my mother tongue, but thought that I could help a little |

Alf weeder sheen. That means "peace out". |

| Lurker | I think this is from a show called DMotor, and they do have a huge pro-German bias, much like Top Gear loves its Jags and Astons. Tim Shrick also talks about cars like he's in a driving physics class. The program also has an annoying habit of not really giving a bottom line in any comparison which is weird. Nonetheless, here's some translation of the STi vs. 911. From the voiceover: There is a review of the facts concerning drivetrain and HP numbers for both cars. Some descriptors of the STi: The rear spoiler is as big as an IKEA shelf The interior is very 90s, this is where they saved money Tim's description: Steering is too "soapy" near the middle, he's a bit negative about the feeling from the front wheels as they both propel and steer the car at the same time. The sound really stands out. There's a bit where he describes the car as an ordinary compact car with maybe 100HP under 3000RPM, and after 4000 RPM there's a great sound from the exhaust and that boxer grumble. Shifting requires getting used to, but you can get it to work effectively if you pay attention to what you are doing. Porsche Gushing about the form and function of the legendary 911. Not only beautiful to look at but needs to driven to be really appreciated Tim's description: Love the steering feel Love the growl "fantastic" Shifter is what everyone should try to emulate. Easy to shift whether driving fast or slow. More fantastic. Back to the STi The STi has rally in it's genes, time to test this Japanese "bomb" at the limit. Tim's description Understeer at turn in, you have to swing the car in the opposite direction a bit then flick the steering so the rear starts to turn. Then it will go back to understeer. The braking system is very solid, and works well even at the limit. The ABS is not intrusive at the limit. The car is heavy in the front, and you can always get it to point straight by stepping on the throttle. Back to 911: This Porsche is for a mass market and has to be easy to drive, it's a car that has to make compromises. You have to turn the car in hard and then allow the rear slip angle to work for you. Good brakes are important, and this car has the ceramic breaks (for $8000 Euro extra). You can do anything to these brakes, they wont fade. On the dry asphalt, I have no idea this is AWD because there's so much rear grip AWD just doesn't come into play. Summary: Both cars are very different, and not just in price. They require very different driving styles to get around corners. But both share that lovely boxer sound which is very special. I'd be happy to do the Audi one if anyone's interested... Last edited by gnu222; 01-18-2007 at 03:41 PM. |

IWSTI Addict since: Jul 2006 Trader Rating: (2) | Thanks for the translation gnu222. I think the STI is superb for being half price of that Porsche. Imagine what Fuji Industries would come out with if they added the extra 29,900 dollars to the STI The STI would make mortal enemies up in the Z06 territory and above. |

IWSTI Addict since: Oct 2006 Trader Rating: (6) | All translations aside. Bang for your buck..the STI has it won... I was easily sold when they played Metallica as a Rally-Blue beast sliced through a corner. Just awesome. Maybe when I sell my house I'll get an RS4 and do a comparo of my own...not |

| Lurker | Watched the RS4 vid. They lavish praise on the Audi in terms of looks, interior, and "sleeper" factor. But Tim believes the weight and the layout of the engine is a major problem. Fast but not spectacular. About the STi: The usual statistics are provided. Up to 3500RPM it's a grocery getter, but shift down and it gets loud and pushes you very hard. Wonderful traction on this changing road surface, it's a car you can really play with. The Audi development team should be given this car to drive so that they can experience what fun to drive really is. An STi driver requires self-confidence, because the way this thing looks isn't for everybody. For 41,500 Euros the STi comes all loaded, and the Audi would end up at over 80,000 Euro with all the bells and whistles. Tim says the giant spoiler is mega-embarassing, the plastic interior isn't good, and the steering wheel is really ugly. You have to be the sort of person who looks at this and just loves it; someone who is a junkie for driving dynamics and will love everything about this car including the looks and the boxer sound. But if you have to be politically correct, if you're a dentist or something, you'd have to get the Audi but you'll end up paying double. So on the cost side, the STi is the right car for rally champion wannabes. (Edit: I score that one for us! Not to mention that 41,500 Euros is nearly 54,000US dollars) |

IWSTI Addict since: Oct 2005 Trader Rating: (0) | Pay no attention to german auto shows. I see them all the time..always crap...I have never seen them talk really bad about any german car. We have the limited over here...but they will always find **** to say about the wing. I'm still waiting on the boxster vs. Sti price comparision. |
