Default STI owner tries to be like Petter and stalls his engine

Poor STI .

If this happens, do you just let the water drain out then start it back up or what? Is it bad for the engine?

probably the intake sucked in the dirty water...otherwise it shouldn't stall at all with water like that..

Yeah it should, doesn't matter if it's dirty or not. Every year at Argentina there are always a TON of cars that always stall in the huge puddles, the trick is to left foot brake, literally half a second before you hit the water you tap the brakes to have the nose dip down and then you immediately get on the gas hard to raise the nose up as high as possible to avoid water from getting into the engine compartment and this will also help make sure you don't rip off your entire bumper.

Some teams like the SWRT have a butterfly valve that the co-driver operates, he simply closes the air intake with the butterfly valve for a split second as you enter the water and then immediately releases it once you're out of it so if and when water does get into the intake, it won't effect the engine.

Serious? Yes it is bad. Water doesn't compress like air, so any significant amount in the engine and you have a holy piston or bent valves...

Indeed, hydrolock will destroy your engine.

Can't see video at work...

But, I was caught in a huge downpour the other day, to the point where you couldn't see the road surface.

I hit a deep puddle and nearly crapped my pants. I was sure that my APS CAI was going to act like a straw and suck in water.

Amazingly enough, nothing happened and soon thereafter the rain let up and I had a fun ride the rest of the way home in full open diff mode.

I wasn't sure if it was just something as simple as restarting the engine as if you stalled at a stop light, or if it was something more serious and could cause damage.

So do you think this guys engine in the video is ruined now?

Good chance it is. If your engine is running (and it looked like he was on the gas, so revving pretty good) and injests water...then you probably have damage. If you think your car is or is about to injest water, always turn it off immediately.

I saw that video once before. I believe the owner had cold air intake in his car so it probably sucked up a crap load of water.

That's the truth, i've blown up a few jet ski motors doing tricks that take me underwater, stayed on the gas because of inexperience, and hydrolocked.

h2o doesn't compress, so if you get it on top of the pistons, you'll bend or break your piston rods, trust me, i've spent a lot of $$ because of h2o.

off topic, but this is why I have avoided a CAI, scared that if i hit a big puddle, i'm going to pull water into the engine...

would that have happened if he left the snorkle in it? thought subarus can go 3ft into the water as long as the snorkle (intake silencer) is there
