Ok, my first thoughts were that there had to be some difference between the tires on the two cars..... but after watching just the front wheels on that Volvo spin, with nothing happening at the rear, I have to wonder what heck is wrong with the thing.

Strange that the Subaru could climb the slope with a trailer hitched to it and the Volvo was stuck even with no extra weight.

Lol yah that was the great, the front wheels on that volvo just keep on spinning, I think Subaru has some of the best AWD systems in the world. It was one of the big reasons I went with an STi over an Evo.

Transferring power from the wheels that slip, to the wheels that slip

Seriously though, why the heck aren't the rear wheels even trying to spin? Would anyone be able to partially translate?

The volvo's maimm powersplit is only 90% front and 10% to the rear.

The Subie can go to 50/50...............Hooray subaru

That is why I bought my first Outback (a 2003 model) instead of a Volvo or Audi. I have never been a big fan of Volvos anyway, but I like them even less no that they all cost around $40,000.

Then what's the point in adding all that extra hardware if you're only going to send 10% to the rear? That can't be right, it makes absolutely no sense.

I'll be more than happy to give a general translation from Swedish.

I actually remember seeing this review right when it aired when I was in Sweden. (around 6 yrs. ago) and like the others in the room watching it, was shocked by the outcome.

At this time, the Volvo Cross Country was just coming out and was hoping for a clear winner over every other stationwagon, which are rather popular in Sweden and rest of Europe.

Anyways...basic translation:

First couple of minutes, the reviewer introduces the cars and explains a little bit about the AWD systems in both. (50% power to fr/rear bla bla...)
The cars are both automatics and have the exact same type of tires. Reviewer mentioned that the Subaru got up the hill w/o probs.
Then the reviewer went up in the Volvo, no success. After a call from Volvo, they said he needs to use more gas. (as you see that didn't work either.)

Then the Subaru went up the hill with approx. 200 kilos (425lbs) of cargo..no prob.
Then Volvo said that he needs to go up hill more carefully with the cargo load.
Reviewer mentioned that the Volvo just didn't make it and needs to fix it. As you can kinda tell, he thought it was bad of Volvo to make a AWD car and not do what it says to do.

My notes: Like I mentioned above, this video is a bit old and was made RIGHT when the Cross Counrty came out. I'm sure by now, Volvo has figured it out and made something that was comparable to the AWD in the Subaru. My translation is a bit general mostly because he was just telling the viewer exactly what you see in the video..nevertheless, still cool to see the Sube beat out the Volvo tractor. (<----owned a 244DL volvo when living in Sweden)

Ok, instead of thanking me for the translation, just send me some meatballs from your local IKEA. heheheh, Tack Sa mycket (thank you very much)

lol nice, go outback! i never been fan of volvo either

thanks to fajensti for translation from swedish to english

that odd when volvo don't use back to start support front.

90% front 10% back
so it look like back have no power to work for back wheels
