Talking K&N Typhoon Sound Clips

I installed the K&N Typhoon short ram intake on my STI yesterday. I love the sound! To me it sounds like a snarly pit bull or an angry slithering snake. The pitch rises higher and higher, winding itself up until you press the clutch in. Then like the crack of a whip, the air is released, you shift gears, away you go, and it all starts over again. I can't get enough of it!

I went on a short little test drive last night with my wife and she was laughing at me because I had this huge grin frozen on my face .

Anyway, today I grabbed my camera and took some video clips to record the sound. I made the images small to keep the file sizes manageable, but left the audio as is so you can hear what the Typhoon sounds like on a stock STI.

This first clip is with the windows closed:

This second clip is with the windows open:

This third clip is from outside, driving by:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WekG6SfuF6k

This last clip is on the street, accelerating more slowly so that you can hear the sound of the air sucking in a bit more:

I've seen people upload their videos at http://putfile.com/ There must be other similar sites, too.

I've read so many posts about the sound, but I really didn't know what to expect. I felt like a giddy school girl when I first heard it .

The video doesn't even do it justice. You don't just hear the bpv but you really hear the turbo spooling and the intake ssssssuuuuucking in air.

My STI is completely stock. Actually, it's hard to capture the true sound of the intake because it's so dynamic. The videos definitely don't do it justice. I was trying to get more of the sucking sound in the last one, though. I've read so many posts describing it in so many different ways, but it really reminds me of a big wind up and then the cracking of a whip. There's just nothing like experiencing it first hand .

Ya, I still remember the stupid grin I had on my face after installing it...I had no idea it was going to be that loud.

Yea I got a typhoon too, its the best sound when you are on boost But the only thing that is concerning me is the hot air under the hood, I mean right now its cold out so its not bad, but will it get really bad in the hotter months??

I was wondering this as well, the vids pretty much sold me on the K&N though thanks stargazer, but i would like to know about the heat under the hood during summer months.

I've read the posts about heat soak, but in Vancouver we don't really many days that are super hot. Most of the time the temperatures are quite comfortable in the summer so I'm not really concerned. Also, the snorkel is pointed right at the filter so heat shouldn't be a problem when the car is moving. It's my daily driver, so the only time that it would be sitting with the engine running would be when I was stuck in traffic. In those cases I wouldn't need full power anyway .

If you look at this picture:

the black circular opening to the left of the filter is the where the air that comes from the front comes out. It's pointed right at the filter intake. So while you're moving I figure it would be getting just the same type of air you would get with the stock air box. Actually, it might actually be better because the stock box isn't there to enclose hot air. When you're not moving is when you may get problems I suppose.
