Default my STI on the dyno (flame shot)

Hey guys, this isn't the best video in the world or anything but I thought I'd share it with everyone. This is my car at Agile Auto getting tuned on their dynapack. I do a pretty nice flame shot at the end of the 5th gear pull.

Do flames shoot out because the car is running rich? I remember seeing an evo at an auto-x event, and i swear that everytime he shifted a freaking 2 foot long fireball shot out the exhaust. It was pretty cool, but does that hurt the car?

Yes it's because it's rich but thats good thing. It's because jeremy enriched the mix a little near redline (to keep things safe) and since i'm catless the leftover fuel particles can make it to the back of my exhaust and then once it hits the fresh air that mixture ignites and "pop." Or something alone thoose lines, I just know it's fun as hell doing them on the highway .

yeah that's right. since it's richer than stoich, there is extra unburned fuel left in the cyls, and after the exhaust stroke it's pushed through the turbo and out the exhaust. It's really only bad if it somehow ignites inside the turbo, but that almost never happens, since there shouldn't be any oxidizers untill the fresh air in the exhaust.

sweet. it get consistant pops from my cutout but i have a cat to keep thing "legalish". there is an evo that shows up at the friday night meets who is running rather rich....with cams and 1000cc injectors and gt30r turbo and it isnt tuned all the way in yet so when he gets on it he leaves a smoke screen. fire is awesome.

If you read the rest of that post i'm saying it's a good thing i'm running rich up top. And when I say rich I don't mean like 9:1, maybe like 10-10.5:1 or so. This is to keep the knock away at the top of the rpm band where the turbo is past it's efficency range and the heat is at it's greatest.

Pig rich is bad, yes, but my car is right in the sweet spot around 11:1.

that's good, I would be scared at even 10. 10.8-11.2 I think would be the best range to stay within. Stock plugs are like $80 very expensive to foul alot...hehe.

Well I also got colder plugs installed, NGK Iridiums (sp?) and they were only about $10 a pop. On top of that i'm guessing at the actual number, I saw my A/F plot but I didn;t get a print out and I don't remember the exact numbers. I'm sure it's within reason as the guys at Agile aren't new comers to tuning a STi.
