The gas tank in the GTO is actually *in* the trunk, taking up more than half the trunk space you'd be lucky to get 2 small golf bags in there with a crowbar. Suprisingly, the GTO interior is very very nice, awesome seats and a great looking dash with gauges matched to the exterior (the yellow being a strange exception, the gauges are a weird brown/gold color). The GTO also gets similar gas milage to the STI, 21/25. Basically it came down to the STI being more pratical, 4 doors, AWD and a usable trunk while still having all of the performance. Although I will say, the rumble of a 6.0 V8 was just a *tad* enticing. - Marsh |

IWSTI Addict since: Sep 2005 Trader Rating: (0) | I also cross shopped the two of them. Interestingly they had the vivid blue GTO with the blue interior which is identical to the STI I want. What were the chances of that. The thing they dont tell you is the GTO with automatic is actually faster than the 6 speed car, but gets much worse mileage. You need the 6 speed to compete in the twisties, but after flogging both, the GTO does not handle nearly as well as the STI and has tons of body roll. I'll second the 6.0, its what sells that car, though the overall car is nice. I dont think its as bland as they make it sound, but I'm also an older guy. The other thing that helps the goat is its actually cheaper to buy than the STI, I could have gotten one of those approx $3500 less than the STI. I would have loved it until my first trip into the twisty bits, then wished I had the other. |

It says a lot about the traction though that it was only a tenth quicker than the STi. Honestly 14.1 for the STi and 14.0 for the GTO are both slow. I am betting high temps and elevation coupled with real world shifting are the culprits. Both cars should run mid to low 13s regardless of the transmission in the GTO. But they did get one thing right, the STi is hands down the better car between the two. Traction and handling are a double whammy the GTO cant match. This ad is not endorsed by this member.
