Default Summit Point Raceway, 8/19/05

Had some fun at a HDPE in Summit Point, WV recently. I logged the sessions with my Scanmaster3, and then synched the data to the video. Here are two sample laps (apologies for the large size)

You may need to download the latest Divx codec to view the files (www.divx.com). Vehicle is still completely stock (tires too), with the exception of brake fluid and pads. LOL, the stock exhaust is so quite, I felt compelled to include some additional background soundrack make it a little more entertaining than listening to wind noise.

Enjoy!

Awesome videos, dude!

What programs did you use to overlay the datalogger output?

Thanks! Adobe Premiere. It has the capability to load a sequence of individual images as a single movie, which greatly simplified things. Also allows you to change the playback rate of the overlay track, which makes it easier to synch things up (the data logger did not sample at a constant rate).

Were the individual overlay images generated by the Scanmaster software, or did you use another program to generate them from your data file?

Again, those overlays are amazing. They're really professional looking, like what you'd see on TV. It makes me wonder if I could do something similar with an AccessPort.

One other question: How did you mount the camera?

Unfortunately, the overlays were not generated by the Scanmaster, and were, admittedly, a PITA to generate. The Scanmaster is just a nice (and fairly inexpensive) OBD-II interface that allows me to monitor and log a fair bit of information from the ECU and two external analog inputs. (I can ramble on more about this if you are interested... details on the device can be found here: http://www.fullthrottlespeed.com/ite...RX~eq~~Tp~.htm ). I actually generated the overlays using Matlab (www.mathworks.com). If you are interested, and have access to Matlab, I would be more than happy to share the code I wrote to do this. If you can log data with the AccessPort and download it to your computer, then you could use this to make a similar overlay. One issue to check would be the data rate, and also how long of a record you could generate. The scamaster samples 18 variables all at 5 Hz, which is just barely fast enough to give a reasonably smooth image on playback.

The camera mount was another issue, and one that needs improving: on my last 5 laps of the day (and also my best by far) the part supporting the camera loosened up and the camera ended up pointing at the back of the passenger seat (D'oh!). I used some aluminum beams, a massive suction cup capable of holding 70 lbs on the back window, and a series of heavy duty ratchet straps to LATCH connectors in the back seat to keep it all in one place. If you want, I might be able to take a picture of it installed, but I am not sure it is worth replicating, as the suction cup raised some eyebrows at the tech inspection, and I had to convince them that if it failed it would still be secured.
