As for the Cobalt SS handling well for a FWD? Sure, according the magazines, but it will not outhandle a STi around a track or road course. Quote:
I would also bet a beer that an STi could take one from a 5mph start.Edit: hey it's a good car for what it is so people should enjoy them. They just sound like crap for some reason. I really prefer the sound of the SRT4.

By the way, I did a 5mph to speed limit run against one of these 'bad boys' already. I did what I call a **** move one morning. I saw an 18 wheeler in the left of two lanes at a light. The right lane ends ~300ft. I figured I 'd get ahead of the truck. Unfortunately, when I pulled up I saw that there was a car in front of it. No biggie, I thought, I'll get in behind the car but in front of the truck. The light changed, I rolled out slowly, and the SS took off with some tire screech. Some primal instinct took over, and from a roll off I went. Caught up easily by the end of first, shifted to second and let off after a second or so. I was far enough ahead and did not need to keep accelerating. I was bone stock at the time. Make of it whatever you will but I would not fear one of these. I agree with Digitalfiend...nice car but it's not like a blown cobra from a roll.

IWSTI Addict since: Feb 2004 | If any cobalt owners read this I'll put you up against my brothers chipped, intake, exhaust heavy *** GS400, and I guarantee he will beat you from a roll, and I destroyed him when I was stock. Send me a PM. |

| Senior STI Driver Feedback Score: 1 reviews | i give it to the cobalt ss,its great bang for your buck.but, from my experience,i raced one from about a 40mph roll and gave him the hit and a second or two(note we both had a passenger) and i passed him like he was nothing.trust me,he was still stomping on the pedal because i heard the lil blower going full force as i passed.sorry cobalt owners, your car is great for what its worth, but you are not hanging with an sti.lastly, that video is b.s.,thats not an sti,its a regular wrx turbo at most.like another poster on here said, you want to prove your theory,im open for the challenge.im in memphis,pm me and we can set it up easily and you can watch your dreams slip away.hell, ill let my girl drive to make it a better race and you will still get smoked.now, lets end this thread because the ricers wont give it up,lock the damned thing. EDIT:its so funny how cobalt ss boys say they can keep up with an sti when a srt-4 will hand them their a$$ on a silver platter from a quarter mile or a roll for that matter. |

| Professional STI Driver Feedback Score: 3 reviews | I don't think there are any Cobalt owners posting in this thread, I'm the one who posted the flick, and I have an STI. They could have pulled a switch a roo, and raced something other than what they filmed in the beginning. However the car they filmed in the beginning is most definitely an STI, and I would be willing to bet the car racing is probably that same STI. What were the circumstances of the race? The STI could have been poorly modified, e.g. blow off valve or some silly intake. The driver could have been fooling around, or just been terrible. There could also be another 20 runs where the STI pulls something crazy. Since the makers of the film aren’t around to answer questions, and the driver of the STI is probably hiding in shame we’ll never know. What I do know is that a SS will hang with you, make a mistake and it will pull on you. Is the car in the same league as the STI? Hell NO. But it is a good car! And I think that it is plausible after seeing this video, that the Impreza in the film that started this tread, could be an STI. |

IWSTI Addict since: Nov 2004 | PKSkull77, who happens to be my very good friend has a car complex. As I have told him many of times, you cannot judge cars from just seeing a video. Lets just say it is an STi in the original video.. you don't know crap about either drivers. If the sti driver was in 6th gear going 60 and trying to race, well there is a great chance he'd loose. The same applies to the second video, you can't hear the engine so you don't know how he's driving it. PKSkull77 continues to call me a "Fanboy" which I am not, I know that there are faster cars on the road. I have personally persued 2 cobalts, and I beat them both, 1 from a dig, and one from a roll. If you're going to be a wus and say things like "I'm going to avoid Cobalts at all costs", then you should sell your nice STi and buy one. No hard feelings Jon! (Puts on flame suit!) |

sorry but im gonna have to greatly disagree with you that the car was in fact an sti, because its not.secondly,at a high rate of speed, lets say 90-100mph,yeah if you make a mistake the cobalt ss will come up on you,but once you correct yourself and slam the throttle then its all over.like i said before, cobalt ss are great bang for their buck but cant and will not even think about dealing with an sti.sorry but that car in the video is not an sti.just look at the interior picks on this thread, why in the hell would anybody go thru all that trouble to change out the seats and everything else? that is a regular wrx at MOST,and if it was an sti then he/she was just jerking off with a car that is inferior to an sti.lol i bet those guys in the video couldnt tell the difference between an evo 8 and a lancer ralliart.

Is this the video that you think is fake? Its not working for me right now so I can take a second look, but if I remember correctly you can see the dash at the end of the video and its definently the STI dash and not the WRX. Furthermore everything on the outside of the Impreza is defeinently STI. So unless someone got the wing, hood scoop, rims, running borads, and stickers, it's an STI. I know people fake that stuff all the time, but you can usually see right through it. Finally, I've seen vids of a WRX and an SS, and its not pretty. That car is NOT a plane Jane WRX, its an STI. I wish someone would take their video camera out, find an SS and prove me wrong, but I don't think its going to happen. Last edited by Pkskull77; 10-02-2005 at 04:51 AM..

IWSTI Addict since: Feb 2004 | Oh I will find one don't worry. Hell I might just go test drive one and have my brother follow in his GS and video it, then I'll post the (ugly) vid of stock STi vs GS and you will see how the SS would only stay with the STi if the STi wasn't trying. The cobalt is nice and cheap, but you should be posting on the ion redline board asking for good races, not here. |
