I came across this on streetfire, and it seems to indicate that the car in the original video might actually be an STI. I don't know the complete story behind this, but it looks like the SS can hang with an STI from a roll, and under some circumstances actually beat it. I'm shocked, a little embarrassed, but willing to admit I might have been wrong.

I'll say it again, yes, a Cobalt SS with 1 person in it can probably hang (i.e. maybe lose by 2 cars or so) but a Cobalt SS with 3 or 4 passengers should not hang at all.

Speaking of Cobalt's, there was a horrific crash involving one today on our major highway (401). Not sure if the guy was speeding (or if it was even a Cobalt SS) or not but a bad lane change vs. a transport truck is never a good thing:

Edit: just watched the video. It looks like they started at 60mph or so. Yes it looked like the Cobalt SS kept up. If that STi is stock that really isn't the best speed. Wtf is up with people starting from 60mph or greater? The other thing is how many fricken gauges does that guy have?! Lastly, launching like that would scare me. That looks like one really good way to bust an axle or something else.

I wonder if that Cobalt is stock...I doubt it.

Just did a check on CobaltSS.net and .com. Hmmm. Many, many, timeslips are showing 95-98mph traps. So, if the STi traps 102mph, how does a Cobalt with 4 people hang?

Bah, I've got to stop posting.

Look at this video. A Cobalt with 2 people can hang with an STI, give it up the car is just as fast as ours on the top end. I'll admit that I am very suprised, but it is plausible.

I don't know about that pkskull. I beat ls1 from a roll all day with just exhaust headers and a pulley. Not even close I pulled like 2 cars everytime i shifted. Mustang gts and bullets are no competition. With any amount of mods the cars aren't even close. Cobras and SS's are faster stock.

I never said it wasn't as quick in the top end. Please read my previous posts.
After watching all these Cobalt videos, I definitely know one thing...they sound hideous. Eww.

A large part of this whole threads discusion was wether or not an SS could hang with an STI. In other words it was not an STI because a Cobalt SS could never make the race that close. Furthermore, a bunch of people were stating that the Impreza didn't look like it was racing. I think the video I posted debunks those theories.

A stock STI will have a lot of trouble with a Cobalt SS Supercharged, therefore the car in the original video might have been and STI.

One video of a Cobalt SS, potentially not stock, hanging with a STi from a high roll doesn't exactly mean every Cobalt is going to do that.

It's great that so many cars are getting increased horsepower. It's just unfortunate when people say, "oh I paid $10k less and can keep up with you in a straightline starting from 100mph." I personally can't wait to see a Cobalt SS on a road course or autox. I'm curious how they handle (in real life, not according to a magazine.)

No real mods for the car yet, so it was likely bone dry stock. The races were from much slower than 100. The Cobalt handles very well for a front wheel drive car.

Well hell, since we're bench racing:

http://www.ssmoparmuscle.com/speedcomp.htm
Cobalt SS: 0-60 5.9s, 1/4 14.40
STi: 4.6, 13.20

http://www.car-videos.com/performanc...D1=169&ID2=310
Cobalt SS: 6.10s and 14.78 @ 95.88
STi: 4.88 and 13.36 @102.35
Street start: 5-60: Cobalt ss: 5.82s STi 5.84s
30-50 in 2nd: Cobalt ss: 2.52s, STi 1.67s

The street start is the anamoly. All other stats show the STi outperforming it in a straight line. 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1 and 1.5 miles are all STi.
