Default High Definition Video: 12.29 @ 115 1/4 pass

I just installed an FP Red turbo. I am tuning it for 93 octane fuel.

I went to the track to perfect the 93 octane tune. I was launching like an old man (1.9+ 60' times) to conserve drivetrain parts.

Was able to muster a 12.29 @ 115mph pass.

I updated my webpage to include in cabin video of this pass, you can access it by:

  • Click the "STi" link
  • Click the "Video Recordings HD" link
  • Have fun...

Thanks...

The 115mph trap is good for high 11's. My normal (axle breaking) launch is 1.6 @ 60'. The FP Red has significantly more lag so I would need to really launch it hard to get a good 60'. I need to buy a couple of spare axles then I will give it he!! off the line.

Great job Jeff!! I will have to get up there to see you run that thing. I'm done for the year with a fried clutch.

Sorry to hear about the clutch.... but that R&R is not so bad... I went with the sprung ACT 6puck... so far it is working fine. Cost was just over $500

Take care

Cool vids. What is your technique for your launch?

Hi Jay,

Well... with the stock turbo I think I had it down pretty good ... but my technique did cause a broken axle.

With the new turbo I have been taking it real easy:
As soon as my opponent pre stages, I start pumping the throttle to get the turbo spinning a bit (3 to 4500 rpm), when my opponent is fully staged I kick it up a bit.. (pumping throttle from 4 to 5500RPM)
When the light is in the vicinity of green.. I slowly let off the clutch and slip it a little bit. I slowly push throttle towards floor till the clutch grabs then I mash it to the floor and never let my foot off the gas till the run is over.
I can get away with a little clutch slip cause I am running an ACT 6 puck.
The launch in the 12.29 video is very poor... my 60' time was only 1.9~ With the stock turbo, I was launching much harder and could get 1.6~ 60' times.
With the stock turbo.. my axle breaking technique was a bit different:
Same as above but when opponent is fully staged, I more aggressively pump throttle to get turbo really spinning..
When the light is in the vicinity of "green", I mash the throttle to the floor and very aggressively take my foot off the clutch (pull back foot like you would if you had bare feet and stepped in a pile of warm dog $hit). There was very little clutch slip with this technique. As a matter of fact, my stock clutch had no problem lasting for over 30K miles and probably 300 launches. The rear axle on the other hand... did not like this style.
Here is a video of the launch that broke my axle... you can see it is much more aggressive (especially when u hear the axle breaking)
The file is just over 60 meg.. right click and save it to your computer:

11's are easily attainable with your setup. Mid 11's at that. How much boost? AFR's are conservative for race gas. Maybe try Q16 and lean it out to 12.5-12.8..

Yup... 11's on pump is what I am going for now. Boost was 22.5, afr is rich but OK for pump. Not sure if I agree with targeting 12.8 on race gas... I have achieved better performance with a tad more timing and 11.8 to 12.2 or so AFR on VP 109

Q16/ VP import is highly oxygenated. It allows hella lean afr's. Give it a shot. Walk it up the AFR's. My tuner told me he could lean me out to 13 afr easy with it. It sounds high but is way better than c16. Look into it. Q16 is equivalent to 118 oct but it's the oxygen content that is designed for turbo cars unlike c16. Dsport magazine did a test of all race fuels last month in their mag and proves Q16 to be the BEST race fuel for turbo cars you can buy by testing all VP racing fuels . It's sick stuff.

With oxygenated gas, you want to run it a bit richer. You need to add fuel due to the o2 content in the gas. Think of it this way, your stuffing the intake ports with as much air as possible via boost. Normally, racegas slows the burn down, so you can run it more aggressively therefore needing a leaner burn to keep your power. Add oxygen to the fuel and now you are getting extra oxygen in via boost and fuel therefore allowing you to create more power. How much more gas really, depends on the setup and the specific gravity of the fuel.

Hi Jeff... thanks for the info.. it matches my experience with VP 109 which is oxygenated.
