This is no surprise at all.

Octane does not equal power, but it enables power (by letting you add timing, add boost, or lean out AFRs). MMT-based additives such as NOS Racing Formula and Torco work, but the MMT residue cruds up the inside of your motor. I ran a couple cans of torco thru my built motor and some of the exhaust valves were leaking from the residue.

How are these mother ****ers allowed to sell these products?? There is evidently no testing done whatsoever.

This reminds me of the window sticker that says how many MPG you are supposed to get. No standard whatsoever. There is no way you can get the MPG that is stated on a window sticker. Also the price per year for gas. What a rip off! They must be filling up at $1.50 a gallon in 2006 when I bought my car.

Yea I learned the hard way that all additives are nothing but a big Rip OFF and actually are bad for your car. Quick story

I owned a 92 Honda Accord about 9 years ago. It was mildly modded (typical honda owned by a ignorant teenager like myself, ) Anyway since I worked at AutoZone at the time I used to try everything that was on the shelf that had a bunch of claims on the label. As time went on of course the placebo affect made me believe that it was helping my car. But of course all the CRAP oil additives I put in my engine sludged up and clogged my oil pick up screen and my engine seized from oil starvation. I warped the cam shaft and needed a re-build. Ive never used oil additives since then. I do however used the Fuel system cleaners in my beater honda every now and then. Who knows if that works, But I will never put anything in my STi.

You guys need to keep in mind that adding octane will reduce power unless your tune accomodates for the additional octane. Take a 93 octane tune and run it on C16 or 100oct unleaded and see what happens.

There is a vp race fuel station by my house. I spoke to the owner regarding octane boosters. He also stated that there are full of crap. The owner says you are better off throwing a few gallons of high octane in. He claims that it will clean your engine way better. Not sure if he was trying to capitalize of his first claim, but I don't know. He recommends one a month filling the tank with 100 octane and it will stay really clean. What do you guys think?

I don't see how running 100 octane is going to clean your engine. If anything, when you put 100 octane in on a 93 octane map you're just running rich. The octane is great if you're tuned for it, but there's no use in putting it in your car with a stock fuel map. The only time I'd add a little 100 octane to a stock map would be if you're going to the track in extremely hot temps and you want a little extra protection.

Actually, there is a standard procedure for determining the EPA mileage ratings. Furthermore, it was just recently revised to better account for "real world" conditions.

Lastly, the window sticker MPG shouldn't be interpreted "as the mileage you are supposed to get". It is there for comparison purposes - your actual mileage may vary.

Octane is another word for "anti-detonation capacity". The higher the octane, the more you can push timing, AFRs, and compression ratios before encountering detonation. Higher octane gas does NOTHING for an engine designed and tuned for 87 octane. In short: the test they ran was bogus, not necessarily the claims on the bottles.

I have used fuel system cleaners...could the same thing be said for those? Worst for the motor than nothing at all?

^ I have had some sucess with Fuel injector cleaner.
96 GMC Jimmy and a 97 Chevy PU.
If they sit for a long period of time and dont get driven much they tend to run rough and surge alittle. I have had CEL lights from misses.
A bottle of cleaner and a few miles and it clears up.
I wouldnt put it in a car not having problems and dont expect it to fix every rough running engine, but if its high mileage and may have a sticky injector give it a try.

All those aftermarket, put in your gas tank additives are bogus. That goes for ALL of them, not just the octane boosters. Don't you think that the engineers that designed our cars would have developed, used, our bought these "inventions" if they really increased gas mileage, improved power, or repaired scarred cylinder walls. They fight everyday to save weight, improve fuel mileage while having HP still. If they could dump a magic liquid in the gas tank to achieve this, they would.
