IWSTI Addict since: Apr 2006 Trader Rating: (44) | I have had alot of questions about battery facts....so everytime I bump...I will put up some facts I found over the NET. BUMP! Battery Fact#1: Cold Cranking AMPS (CCA): The amount of current a battery can provide at 0 °F (−18 °C). The rating is defined as the amperage a lead-acid battery at that temperature can deliver for 30 seconds and maintain at least 1.2 volts per cell (7.2 volts for a 12-volt battery). It is a more demanding test than those at higher temperatures. Subaru's average starter current draw ranges form 90-105 AMPS depending on temperature. IWSTI Addict since: Apr 2006 Trader Rating: (44) | BUMP! Battery Fact#2 AGM, or Absorbed Glass Mat Batteries: The Deka Power Sports Batteries are a newer type of sealed battery uses "Absorbed Glass Mats", or AGM between the plates. This is a very fine fiber Boron-Silicate glass mat. These type of batteries have all the advantages of gelled, but can take much more abuse. These are also called "starved electrolyte", as the mat is about 95% saturated rather than fully soaked. That also means that they will not leak acid even if broken. |

IWSTI Addict since: Apr 2006 Trader Rating: (44) | Bump! Battery FACT#3 Battery Charging: Remember you must put back the energy you use immediately. If you don't the battery sulfates and that affects performance and longevity. The alternator is a battery charger. It works well if the battery is not deeply discharged. The alternator tends to overcharge batteries that are very low and the overcharge can damage batteries. In fact an engine starting battery on average has only about 10 deep cycles available when recharged by an alternator. Batteries like to be charged in a certain way, especially when they have been deeply discharged. This type of charging is called 3 step regulated charging. Please note that only special SMART CHARGERS Such as the ones made CTEK using computer technology can perform 3 step charging techniques. You don't find these types of chargers in parts stores and Wal-Marts. The first step is bulk charging where up to 80% of the battery energy capacity is replaced by the charger at the maximum voltage and current amp rating of the charger. When the battery voltage reaches 14.4 volts this begins the absorption charge step. This is where the voltage is held at a constant 14.4 volts and the current (amps) declines until the battery is 98% charged. Next comes the Float Step. This is a regulated voltage of not more than 13.4 volts and usually less than 1 amp of current. This in time will bring the battery to 100% charged or close to it. The float charge will not boil or heat batteries but will maintain the batteries at 100% readiness and prevent cycling during long term inactivity. Some gel cell and AGM batteries may require special settings or chargers. Battery Life can greatly be increased if maintained properly with a Smart Charger.***So if your battery dies, don't just jump it and let the Alternator charge it, this will decrease the lifespan of your battery. Bring it back to 100% with a smart charger. CTEK3300 Smart Chargers are available let me know if you need one! Click here for more info: CTEK 3300 Battery Charger Blow Out Sale! |

IWSTI Addict since: Apr 2006 Trader Rating: (44) | Bump! Battery Fact#6; Batteries can can withstand a limited number of discharge/charge cycles. (for those who store your vehicles in the winter) Therefore, it is recommended that all stored batteries be maintained at a full state of charge. Special chargers are available that monitor battery voltage and apply enough charge to maintain the battery during extended periods of nonuse. Chargers that maintain full charge constantly are preferable to those that recharge the battery when the battery falls below 80% of full charge. A properly maintained stored battery can last up to 10 times longer than a non maintained stored battery. Hint Hint CTEK3300 Charger/Tender: CTEK 3300 Battery Charger Blow Out Sale! IWSTI Addict since: Apr 2006 Trader Rating: (44) | Bump! Battery Fact#7: Q. Why Do Batteries Discharge More Quickly in Cold Weather? A. The electric current generated by a battery is produced when a connection is made between its positive and negative terminals. When the terminals are connected, a chemical reaction is initiated that generates electrons to supply the current of the battery. Lowering the temperature causes chemical reactions to proceed more slowly, so if a battery is used at a low temperature then less current is produced than at a higher temperature. As the batteries run down they quickly reach the point where they cannot deliver enough current to keep up with the demand. If the battery is warmed up again it will operate normally. So if you live in a severely cold area, get a battery warmer and stop worrying! |

IWSTI Addict since: Apr 2006 Trader Rating: (44) | Bump! Battery Fact #8: Are the Deka Batteries Fully Charged? Deka Power Sport Batteries come fully charged from the factory. As with all batteries, they tend to loose charger over time (AGM Batteries lose it much slower than wet batteries). To ensure everyone recieves a battery that is "fully charged 100%", I top off every battery I ship-out with a CTEK 3300 |

IWSTI Addict since: Apr 2006 Trader Rating: (44) | Bump! Battery Fact #9: Battery Output is affected by temperature. Current output decreases as temperature drops. Current output increases as temperatures increase (to a point). In extremely hot areas it is also important to keep batteries cool. You can do this by using a reflective heat wrap. Also, a battery stored at 140 Deg F. will discharge faster than one that is stored at 70 deg F. This Deka ETX14 Battery was tested at temperatures ranging from 60 to 80 DegF. Look at that Amp Rating! IWSTI Addict since: Apr 2006 Trader Rating: (44) | Bump! Battery Fact #10 There are only a handfull of US Battery Manufactures. Basically, there are three main battery producers in the nation: Exide, Johnson Control Industries(JCI), and DEKA. At this point, DEKA East Penn manufacturing is the only one making money, they simply cannot produce enough batteries to meet demand. So if you see a battery with a different label that looks like a DEKA...it is probably a DEKA!!!! Last edited by Freddie32001; 04-19-2007 at 10:29 AM. |

IWSTI Addict since: Apr 2006 Trader Rating: (44) | Bump! Battery Fact#11 What is AGM and how is that different from Maintenance Free? Wet Cell (flooded), Gel Cell, and Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) are various versions of the lead acid battery. The wet cell comes in 2 styles; serviceable, and maintenance free. Both are filled with electrolyte and I prefer one that I can add water to and check the specific gravity of the electrolyte with a hydrometer. The Gel-Cell and the AGM batteries are specialty batteries that typically cost twice as much as a premium wet cell. However they store very well and do not tend to sulfate as easily as wet cell. There is no chance of a hydrogen gas explosion or corrosion using these batteries. Most Gel-Cell and some AGM batteries require a special charging rate, especially the deep cycle models. I personally feel that careful consideration should be given to the AGM battery technology for applications such as Marine, RV, Classic and Performance cars just to name a few. If you don't use or operate your equipment daily; which can lead premature battery failure; or depend on top-notch battery performance then spend the extra money. Gel-Cell batteries still are being sold but the AGM batteries are replacing them in many cases. There is a little confusion about AGM batteries because different manufactures call them different names. A couple popular ones are regulated valve, and dry cell batteries. In most cases AGM batteries will give double the life span and many more deep cycles than wet cell battery.a: |

IWSTI Addict since: Apr 2006 Trader Rating: (44) | Bump! Battery Fact#12: Battery Installation Safety Always, Yes Always disconnect the negative terminal first and ALWAYS, when reconnecting, connect the positive first. ANY Battery, Bike or Car. You connect the positive terminal first so that if you slip when connecting the negative terminal, and touch your wrench (or screwdriver, or STEEL WATCH, so remove it. (ed) whatever you're using) between the terminal and the frame, you don't arc-weld your wrench to the battery, to the frame, etc. If you connected the negative terminal first, then slipped and touched the positive terminal and the frame with your wrench, you'd complete a circuit (a short circuit - no resistance) and sparks would fly. |

IWSTI Addict since: Apr 2006 Trader Rating: (44) | Bump! Battery Fact#13: Storing your battery for long periods of time: If you use your battery for seasonal activities such as track days only and must store it for extended periods of time, a battery maintainer is recommended (CTEK3300) Maintainers are also great for winter starting - A fully charged battery has maximum starting power!
