Default Pre-Order Discounts: New MadDad(TM) Metal V2 One-Piece Catted Downpipe

Well folks, the MadDad(TM) Metal downpipe evolves once again. Origonally the idea was to create a one-piece version with the exact same features and setup as the two pipe setup (shorty downpipe and 3CE), but by doing it as a one piece be able to lower the price by $20-30 due to two fewer flanges, less welds, and one product production run rather than two. Instead of that happening we decided to leave the price right where it is and just add content to make it a better value. In this case the content is the inclusion of a 2nd Aux. 02 bung positioned for a wideband/tuning. It's not installed in the photo but it will be part of the production units available mid-January. In addition a 5-layer metal turbo to downpipe gasket will also be included. So we think adding those two items to the mix was the better value proposition rather than dropping the price $20-30. I think most will agree. And finally, we've made an adjustment to the wastegate divider plate(can't be seen in photo) to allow plug and play fitment on the STi without any filing of the separator plate. This use to require a minor 1/8" trim for install on the STi. The photo sums up the rest if your not arleady familiar with the MadDad(TM) Metal V2 downpipe.

NOTE: The two-piece setup IS NOT being discontinued. Some folks still like the flexability of the two-piece setup and the ability to swap back in the last factory cat pipe when/if the time requires it. That was the whole idea about offering a two-pipe solution, but for folks looking for a 3" non tapered exit from their downpipe, the one-piece seemed to us like the better option. Adding the extra 02 bung and gasket to the two-piece will mean a price increase of $20 to $599 on the two pipe combo. The shorty section will be available for $419.95 for those that want to mate to the factory cat OR we will be offering the two pipe setup with dual metal substrate cats for $699.95

As we do with any new product introduction there is always an incentive to pre-book your order. This will be no different. You'll be able to order a the V2 one-piece for a limited time for a delivered price of $549.95. There will be an option to get a complete 3" MadDad(TM) turboback including the V2 one-piece and the very well received(and still fairly new) MadDad(TM) Whisper Catback. Early customer reviews are proving it to be the exhaust of choice for a no drone setup and quiter than even the current quiet standards. Here is a link to early reviews:
MadDad(TM) Whisper Customer Reviews

The Whisper is normally $649 but can be purchased with a V2 one-piece for $599(freight is not included on the catback). It's worth noting at this point that the V2 one-piece and the Whisper 3" catback are not produced in a "donut gasket" version. These piece use a non tapered full 3" flange at the downpipe exit/catback inlet. The Whipser includes a high quality low turbulence flex joint in place of the factory donut gasket. We will follow up with some pics later in the week.

For the complete design goals, pics and sound clip of the Whisper, check out this link: you should listed to the clip for "sound character" purposes only. The camcorder mike gain and position as well as the coversion to the web format make it difficult to get perspective on volume.

Do you have any idea as to the performance hit when going with the dual cat setup? I want to make sure I can pass smog

Also, there was a post with a picture of a smog check slip with the maddad, but no mention if those figures were passing?

Thanks.

I don't have hard dyno figures to give you hard data but seeing that we get basically catless dyno regults with the V2 with single cat(and have dyno sheets), I don't think you will see any butt dyno difference with a second metal substrate in the last cat position.

In reference to the old check slip, I forgot the image name but it is out there. I'm out of the state right now. When I get back to the office I'll upload that image again. It was from an STi owner running our downpipe as the only/single cat in the system. The results(according to him) was an easy pass. If anyone is interested in going in for a voluntary test with the new V2 one-piece I'd be happy to cover the cost so long as we can a printout of the results to post.

I'll give it a shot. Do you know what state that owner was from?

Downpipes are shipping to us with a few trickling out to us tomorrow. The short run of Whipsers are all pre-sold. We'll be about 30 days before we have them again. Also be on the lookout for a 2.5" Bolt-on Axleback Whisper as highlighted in the January issue of SubieSport magazine. They are running a full MadDad(TM) Exhaust on their Project WRX Wagon. Velocity Header/Uppipe, V2 Metal Downpipe, and the only 2.5" Whisper Axleback(at least for the moment). Oh yeah, the LOVED it.

I have the two-piece catted version - great product...no issues in VA sniffer either.

I just had PDX Tuning install the downpipe & whisper cat-back today. For sound, it is about half-way between my previous combo (Perrin catless DP and Invidia G200 catback) and stock. Can't hear it at all on the freeway (over tire noise ), at idle it is very quiet, and it make a comfortable boxer rumble at part throttle, without being an attention magnet for cops. The tip is much, much more sedate than the G200 tip .

Other observations...

1. The muffler can is very visible from behind the car. However, I anticipated this and I rattlecanned the back face of the can itself with high temperature black paint.

2. The tip is a nice diameter. If I could change anything about it, I would make it 1/2" to 1" longer. That's just a preference thing, everyone will have a different opinion. I'm somewhat concerned about soot on the bumper (not a problem I had with that ginormous tip on the G200 ).

3. I need to reset the ECU and see what it will relearn. Without resetting it, I now see about 17 psi indicated, sometimes 18, where I used to see 19-20.

4. Fit & finish is great. It doesn't look like any parts were skimped on at all, everything is top notch. I am amused at the idea that the heat shield has anything to do with protecting the O2 sensor . Couldn't have anything to do wth "looking like a cat" could it?

Overall very happy, and I would recommend this system to anybody who wants something that purrs with enjoyable muffler music, but is not flashy, and not look-at-me loud. Basically, anybody over 30.

Can you post pictures of the system installed on your car. I would like to see how the muffler tip fits with relation to the bumper and the size of the muffler can.

I just had my downpipe and whisper cat-back installed along with a stage 2 pro tune on March 1. My opinion is that fit + finish are top notch. The sound is a bit more "rumbly" than the stock pipe.
As far as ultimate available power is concerned, I can't comment as I had specified peak torque values as my goal not necessarily peak HP. Tony at XX Tuning understood that I wanted as much torque as possible at low + midrange to power out of corners. For a 3" pipe it seems to flow very well IMO. My compromise in power vs. torque resulted in 335lbft. at 3600 rpms. with 300 lb.ft.from 2850 to 4750 rpms. Peak HP. ended up at 285 at5250 rpms. All in all I am very happy with the Mad Dad exhaust product.
One other benefit to the whisper exhaust is the stock looking tip. It might not appear like a nonstock exhaust to those cops who are prone to hassle people who have swapped out their systems.

Come on now guys...of course the heatsheild is there to protect the 02 sensor from road debris....

I've had a Whisper on my car since our very fist one-off prototype(of which there were 3 before we blessed it with approval) somewhere back in September if memory serves me correct. Not a hint of soot on the bumper at least not with a V2 downpipe on the car. I can't comment with other combos but there are few guys with Helix downpipes and Whipsers on the forum you might try pinging.

Glad everyone is happy with the product. Generally the way MadDad(TM) products come about is that I personally have a need for a part for my personal driving lifestyle and just don't find exactly what I need so we make it. I'm 37 with a wife and two baby seats in the back of my car so having products that give me the performance I want and with those little extra personal details like the heatshield on the downpipe(Massachusetts is almost as bad as California with this stuff) and an exhaust that isn't really loud are all critical. One of the key things I wanted out of the Whisper was for the exhaust to almost(but not quite) disappear when cruising on the highway. I've driven personally with a lot of nice exhausts but when taking long trips many of them just became tiring. When I was able to shut off my radio with the windows rolled down and listen to the Whisper all day long........that's when we said "build it".

More Whispers are coming off the line next week and shipping to customers by end of the week. V2 one-piece downpipes are also in stock, although low. I am very happy to report that STi owners that have reported back to us all mentioned there were no issues with the wastegate separtor flange on the new V2 one-piece. This was one of the revisions for the pipe and it appears to have resolved that minor filling issue on STi's.
