Default Attention Authorized Vendors: What are the pros and cons of doing group buys?

Hi everyone!
Just wanted to know what vendors think are the pros and cons of doing group buys.

Pro: you sell a lot of product at a prenegotiated price you're comfortable with in one bulk deal and hit potential customers you otherwise wouldn't have snared

con: you don't make as much profit as you would spreading those individual sales over time; organizing the group buy might be a bit complicated

...curiously if you're running a group buy website shouldn't you already know this?

We are well aware of the pros and cons........from the point of view of a guy just wanting to get a good deal going.

However, we are not vendors and have never been a vendor. We have never run any type of retail shop and don't have the background or experience to truely understand the pros and cons of group buys.

For instance, one big complaint we got from a vendor was taking deposits. Apparently, taking a deposit from committed buyers was a hassle. With this feedback, we've implemented automatic PayPal deposits when buyers sign up as "committed".

It is the little details like this that we are trying to extract from vendors like you. It is not practical to believe that we know it all.

The Pros are somewhat obvious so I'll just add on to the "Con" portion.

These all tie in to one another.

1. As Vincent mentioned, deposits are a nightmare. Even if a buyer says they are committed, there is still a chance that they will change their mind and then demand their deposit back regardless of the conditions or time frames that were agreed upon prior to taking the deposit. This is very frustrating.
2. When a buyer does back out and the product has already been ordered/purchased by the vendor, we are then stuck with a bunch of that product Generally, group buys aren't done on items that are normally stocked so the items potentially sit on the shelves for some time.

Ultimately, the lack of true commitment is always the culprit for my decision to not have group buy. I love giving out great deals when I can and I've had a number of fantastic buyers with my group buys

Vincent, I look forward to working with you again in the near future!
