Default brake piston spreader tool

Anybody used the above tool to push the pistons back for a pad change? How necessary or how much easier does it make it? I'm about to do my first pad change and it sounds like some people have had difficulty pushing the pistons in evenly or far enough to get the stock shims on the replacement pads too. Thanks

I just use a flat head screwdriver to back the pads off enough to get them out and then push the pistons back with my hands.

Same here. One less thing to carry to the track.
