Default Can anybody comment on RE01R's for track days?

I've heard all kinds of crazy things about them, like they grip very close to as well as Victoracers to being able to take heat like an RA1.

What's true and what's not? Is the grip really on par with older race tires? Can they be pushed hard on a track for 20 minutes and not grease out to the point of useless?

Right now I'm running 615's, but I'd like a bit more stick. I was thinking about a set of NT01's, but I like the idea of RE01R's for their durability.

How much it helps depends on what quantifiable conditions you've thrown at them.

thats fair.

i do ALOT of driving, spirited and non.

ive had the car on Pocono, when they were less than a day old, they were AWESOME... and i live in the burbs of PA with all kinds of twisty roads, and they take that easily... they also have done me well on the highways.... they are also excellent in the rain... never lost confidence in them on normal pavement... some of the paving around here gets extremely slick when wet because of its composition and it maintained grip on that as well. FWIW i had them put on the car mid june and have since put about 5k miles on them.

I did 2 track days with 225/45/17 RE01R's on the stock wheels. They did VERY well. 5 15-20 minute sessions each track day and they never over heat and get greasy at all. They stick very well. I got 4th place in a 24 car time attack with those tires. Only my 2nd track day ever too. Many cars had more power than me and wider tires than me. I like them so much I just bought 255/40/17 RE01R's to go on my 17x8.5 wheels. I don't have any experience on R-comps so I can't compare to those at all, but the RE01R's are amazing compared to RE070's, RT615's.

It could help a lot if you told me you do track days on them in 95+ degree weather.

Seeing that you're in Arizona, you have to deal with the heat I'm talking about. If I get the extra set of wheels I'm looking at I'll probably throw a set of 245/40-17's RE01R's on them.

Why not go 255/40/17? Afraid of rubbing? My 255/40/17 RT615's are the exact same size as the 255/40/17 RE01R's.....to the 1/10 of an inch. My RT615's on 17x8.5 +50 offset wheels do not rub at all.

I also have done mountain drives pushing fairly hard in 90+ degrees and the RE01R's never over heated in that setting either.

A few reasons...

1. 245's are on sale at www.tirerack.com
2. They're going on an 8" wide wheel
3. My 245/45's rub on some corners, but I still need to roll the rears

I'm probably going to get the 245/40's for the gearing advantage.

These tires will be used for regular track days and HPDE's, non competitive events. My main concern is how the tire handles heat, and that the level of grip is mostly comparable to the 245 RT615's I'm running. I'm not really concerned with fitting the widest, most grippy tires possible. I just want something that has a tad bit more grip than my RT615's, handles heat better, and doesn't drop off when they wear as fast as the RT615's do.

245/40/17 is a smaller diameter than stock, which wont kill you or anything. I was gonna go 245/40/17 my self until I saw that they came out with a 255/40/17 which is the same diameter as stock....well, 24.9" compared to stock 25"....close enough, lol. 245/40/17 will be 24.7" iirc.
