Default Need Guru Tire Advice Should I get PS2's Again or Not??

Ok I really like the ps2's because (some of this is relative to stock tires), quiet, work really well in rain and pretty damn good in dry,

what i dont like= softer sidewall easy to wear out, seems like they could have a little more dry grip

so is there anything that will corner a little better than ps2 but still be equiv in the rain, and have a stiffer/more beefy sidewall?

I'm guessing not but any experience would be helpful.

T1R sucks.

I wouldn't say they are any where near the PS2.

put some more air in the ps2's and the sidewall issue becomes less obvious

38-40psi should do it.

i have one or two psi more up front, as those seem to roll on the sidewalls more than the rears.

Yeah I love my PS2's. I have at least 20k on them, been to several HPDE events, drive it pretty hard and it still has some good tread left. Plus they are pretty damn sticky and good in the rain. That said I will be buying another set.

I do 38 in the front and 34 in the rear.

EDIT: would like to add that they are the lightest summer DOT tire I have found. Tire Rack lists tire weights.

What do you use the car for?

They just do not share the construction to be comparable to other maximum performance tires available today.

PS2s are good for the street, and I stress the word 'good'. They are comfortable, quiet, offer good wet performance and good dry performance. Comparing them to the RE070s, RE01Rs, Neovas, or even the RT615s, you would be sacrificing a huge amount of lateral grip.

FWIW, I speak from experience as I once used them on my 2004 STi as a summer tire and also autocrossed with them a few times. I can assure you that they are NOT an autocross tire in every sense of the word.

they come on the turbo 911, frankly I don't think they handle much worse at all than the stock tires. I think you are underestimating them to some degree at least

jermdeez, tried to respond to your PM but your box is full. So I'll just post up here.

I had them in 235/45/17.

1) I personally wouldn't buy a shorter tire then stock (ie 235/40 or 245/40) since the STI gearing is already so short, that just makes it shorter.
2) I prefer a slightly wider tire for grip and to protect the rim a little better.
3) The RE070 is a wide 225, basically a 235, so getting a 225 in anything else could actually end up being a narrower tire.
4) stock size on JDM STis is 235/45/17, so it must be good... (of course it is 235 RE070, so maybe actually closer to a 245...)

I loved them in the rain, hated the mushy sidewall. As far as I can tell there is no good rain tire that has a stiff sidewall. Note that on Tirerack, a lot of the bigger diameters have an XL load rating which I assume means a beefier sidewall, and helps explain why it comes stock on all those high-end cars.

I personally look at every tire purchase as an opportunity to try something different. Last summer I needed my DD tires to do autox duty, so I'm on Azenis 615s now - I would probably do the RE01Rs next time around. Takeoff Advan A046s from the Evo are also a good option - they come up on EvolutionM.net quite a bit, basically as stiff and grippy as the 070s, but with a better rain pattern.

I actually wouldn't mind the PS2s again for DD, now that I have a dedictated autox setup, but I just feel they are a little too expensive.
