Default Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R

I read some very good reviews on these tires as a good replacement for the noisy RE070's, so I had them installed on my '04 STi.
They are definitely more quite, with nice steering feel. I am still breaking them in, so the verdict on road holding and braking is pending, but so far I like the way the car drives and I am enjoying the engine noise too!
The only problem is that they look thinner than the RE 070's, although they are the same size (225 45 17)!
Now, I have mixed feelings about this and thinking maybe I should I have gotten a bigger size!
Any ideas or suggestions? My rims are the original 7.5" BBS.

the sidewall wont be as "square" as an RE070, but you didn't do anything wrong.

enjoy the new tires.

I ran 245/45/17 RT-615s on the 7.5" rims but am running the 245/40/17 01Rs on 8" rims. If rims are in your budget get away from the 7.5 stockers...they're too limiting.

They are better than the RE070's in every way....accept for sidewall stiffness. They are stickier and quieter than RE070's. Also cheaper. 245/40/17 RE01R's are going for $168 on Tirerack right now.

That is mostly because the 255 RT615's are 9.4 inches wide and the 245 RE01R's are 9 inches wide.

I sure wish they made a 255/40/17 RE01R that was 9.3-9.4 inches wide. I would be in street tire heaven.

I just got these installed about 3-4 weeks ago in the 245/40/17 and after a little debate with myself, i like them more than 070s and i really liked them. Put a few more pounds in these and the 070 response is almost the same, plus wayyyy better grip. They also look much more agressive and just "better", smoother ride, somewhat less noise, etc etc. I will definately be sticking with these for awhile. Ill try and get some pics if i can borrow a digital camera.

So are we saying here the RE-01R have more grip but a slightly softer side wall the the RE 070. If we are comparing a 225/45/17?

The beauty of the 01R is that it comes in more sizes than just 225/45/17. If you have the wheel for it..go wider than stock.

The 01R sidewalls are less stiff than the 070 but don't be fooled by this. The 01R has a very compliant ride but it performs really well under stress.

I know some folks have purchased these in size 245/45 17 and I would like to hear from them on their impressions of the car with tires that size.

The JDM STi's come with 235/45 17's, and I have run 235/45 17 winter tires and liked them, but 245 is another step up and I'd really like to hear people's likes and dislikes.

simply looking at it from a size aspect it's too tall.

but alot of people like the taller tire, and it only really becomes and issue if you're on stock wheels and lowered, alot.

From a performance standpoint why would you want the 245/45s when the 245/40 is available?
