I have an 05 sti with stock bbs rims. What tire size should i get 245/45/17, 245/40/17 or do i get 225/45/17? For the 01r's. My car is not lowered and not planing on it. If so why? thanks

Why not look at the measurement data for the tire to select one that has close to the same diameter, and go from there?

Do you plan on racing? If so, I would go with the 245/40/17, gives you a wider contact patch, yet keeps close to the stock diameter..

Damn the 245/40/17's are going for 205 a piece now on tirerack? How would the 235/40/17's which are 30 bucks cheaper fare? Isn't that the JDM size?

this is a tricky question and physics won't lead one to any enlightenment. My theory is that a wider tire disperses peak instantaneous loads when loaded to the limit at the microscopic scale. It doesn't really matter what theory you believe or how much mumbly-gook you throw at it, the bottom line and the benefit of wider tires is simply, wider tires will generate more peak gs.

Arrow Re: Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R

Looks like they are on sale again at 160 dollars or so... unless I am looking at different ones?

Question: What are the stock sti tire's size?

And this is silly but what do the numbers mean as far as :
245/40/17

225/45/17

And why in the above does first number bigger but the second number is smaller in the first figure compared to the second figure of a smaller first number and larger second number?

I know that the 17 is for the wheel size of 17" but what about the rest?

Thanks,
-Nigel

this might help some of you:

Example: 185/60R14 85H or 185/60HR14

185mm x .60=111mm
111mm x 2=222mm
222mm + 355.6mm(14")= 577.6mm or 22.74"

The first number is the width of the tire in millimeters, measured from sidewall to sidewall. To convert to inches, divide by 25.4 In the example above, the width is 185mm or 7.28".

The second number is the aspect ratio. This is a ratio of sidewall height to width. In the example above, the tire is 7.28" wide, multiply that by the aspect ratio to find the height of one sidewall. In this case, 185x0.60=111mm or 7.28"x0.60=4.36".

The last number is the diameter of the wheel in inches.

to be simple

for a 225/45/17

225 = Section width (this isn't a 100% accurate number, not all 225s are 225)
45 = The Profile in % of the Section width. (this can get complicated but for simplicty sake lets say it's just 45% of 225 (for this example)).
17 = Wheel Diameter

i can explain further if you're still confused.

the 245/45/17 is taller by nearly .7"s this can cause rubbing issues on some suspensions and wheel sizes.

the 245/40/17 is closer to stock diameter.

the 245/40/17 with the shorter sidewall will also have better steering response (in theory).
