Yes. My comparo is of the same stock 225/45/17 size between RE070's and RE01R's. To add to my results, out of 23 cars in a time attack event, I got 4th fastest lap running 225/45/17 RE01R's on my STi. It was only my second track day ever and my STi's power level is/was bone stock. RE01R's FTW.

245/45 is a large enough change in diameter that it will move shift points and change engine RPM's at speed. 245/45 has a 9.1" tread width, compared to 8.3" for 225/45.

Why would I choose 245/45 over 245/40? Because they're smaller in diameter than a 225/45, and the stockers on USDM cars are already one size lower than their JDM counterparts; that makes it look to me as though 245/40's are one more step in the wrong direction.

the issue with the 245 is that it is nearly 1" too tall (."7).

this can cause issue when lowered, lower than STi Pinks.

since we are talking about Bridgestones, how do S-03's compare to RE070 and/or RE-01R, for some reason I always thought S-03 was close to the best dry grip you can get in the bridgestone street tire line...and not many STi owners run them, so any thoughts would be appreciated

S03s are old news. RE01Rs are Bridgestone's new pimp street tire.

Has anyone mounted the 245/40 RE-01R on the original 17 x 7.5" BBS wheel? Any problems with this combination? Bridgestone reccommends a 8" to 9.5" rim for this size.

Whereas for the 245/45 size, they recommend a 7.5" to 9.0" rim. Does anyone know why you can run a 245/45 tire on a 7.5" rim and not the 245/40 size?

the 245/40 on the 8 inch rim seems to have nearly the same fit as the stock re070... the section width and tread width are slightly larger but not as much as the 225 vs 245 says it should be. That said, i think the 245/40/17 is a better tire for the 8 inch rim, im lowered pretty low and i dont have any rubbing, but i think the 225/45/17 might be a better fit for a 7.5 inch rim. The 245/45/17 is a somewhat tall tire, plus an inch in diameter than the 245/40 so you're talking about longer gears but sacrificing handling in some aspects, also the sidewall is half an inch higher and would tend to roll easier also, but this is also why you can fit it over a 7.5 inch rim.

I have the 245/40 on 9" wheels and they seem to be a little stretched a bit. I wish they made the 255/40 for the US market.

Stetching tires is a GOOD thing! I would much rather have a 245 stretched than a 255 . Much better turn in and steering response.

Anyway, I just mounted a set of these in 225/40/18 on some 18x8" enkeis for my girlfriend's car and they are awesome tires.

Just read about this on NASIOC:
http://www.potenza.com/

$100 rebate on RE-01Rs for certain car club members, including SCCA, BMW, Corvette, etc. Sadly no Subaru club included, so I'll have to decide which one to join to get the rebate.

+1 for the 01R's. I kept w/the 225's though myself. I didnt feel the weight penalty at each wheel was worth the extra width. No compromises w/them at this point & enjoying 'em.

QUOTED FOR THE TRUTH!

I don't remember how many times i've said that, but for some people they only want the widest tire possible.

I dd my s03's (235/18) and the perform nearly the same as the re070 in terms of grip. road noise is non existent. the rears do kick out easier (235's stretched on 8.5") but thats how i like my car to handle.

As to being the new pimp tire, maybe in the USA. Re01r's have been around for some time now. they are even used on JDM challenge cars (i.e. re01r cup race) where its the only tire used. If you watch hot version or best motoring, the tire of choice for the testers are the Reo1r. It wouldnt be used if it was a "crappy" tire.

I have the reo1r's in 245/40/17 and couldnt be more happy with them. sidewall stiffness feels close to the re070's and the treadblock design is what makes it a quieter tire NOT a less superior tire.

i just got these in 255/45 today and my initial feel of them is great. took the car through some twisties and they grip real well. they seem a bit softer in the wall but not very noticeable in the corner, and still stick well. one big thing i noticed was the decrease in interior road noise. i have no back seat and run tein flexes so i tend to feel every little bump in the road, these seemed to roll a bit smoother. in the end im happy.
