Food for thought...
That's what I did.

But if you're getting 3 seasons out of your winter tires, that's pretty darn good...

I won't get that many because I do a lot of traveling through the holidays. But two seasons is good enough to justify it. That and knowing that I can get home on days like today without having to worry when the (insert summer tire of choice) will decide to take a break and plant me into the center divider on 696.

You have a $30k+ car. Don't trash it because you weren't willing to put $500 into a set of winter tires every three years.

Being able to move along slowly (accelerate) in fresh snow is decidedly different than trying to corner or stop on packed snow when moving along at a moderate or fast clip.

The RE070s are a high-performance summer tire. Why would you think the tire engineers don't know what they're talking about? That's the implicit conclusion to be drawn by saying the RE070 is a great snow tire.

Use the right tire in each circumstance:

For high-performance summer use - use a high-performance summer tire.
For winter use - use a dedicated snow tire.
For a compromise of spring, summer, fall and winter driving - use an all-season tire but remember the compromises that are involved in such a tire.

This is not a question of driver skill (e.g. a highly skilled driver being able to make a summer tire work in the snow). This is a question of the phyical properties of a tire and the circumstances in which it is being asked to perform.

Well my recommendation, if your "workarounds" don't pan out (and you mess your car up)...don't post it online. "Flame war" and "IBTL" come to mind.

A good A/S tire include the Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Positions, Pirelli PZero Neros M+S, and Continental ContiExtreme Contacts.

Good winter tire are those Blizzaks.

Good drivers are "consciously" aware of the circumstances in which they're operating their vehicles. They're also honest about their skill levels, about their experience and capabilities, and about the capabilities of their cars, and about their car's preparation for the conditions.

When I drove my 2002 WRX in the winter, it had dedicated snow tires on it.

When I upgraded to an STi, I elected to drive a winter beater (also with dedicated snow tires).

So now the STi will sit in the garage until Spring arrives and the streets are cleared.

It'd be better to hitch a ride with someone than to try and drive the STi on RE070s in the snow.

I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I had a similar attitude and put off getting snows. An unexpected snow storm dropped around 2-3in of snow on the ground. I thought I was fine with AWD, but the car was nearly impossible to control. I'd have the wheel fully cut right trying to make a right turn, but the car would continue on it's foward path straight into the middle of the intersection. After numerous close calls, and nearly colliding with a few telephone poles, I went and picked up some snows the very next day. (All while traveling under 15mph mind you.)

The RE070's are great in the snow.............(If you're looking for a pair of skis). No traction and alot of sliding.
