Default Tires for STU

No I didn't search, but that's because I'm lazy.

Need tires for STU:

Falken RT615 245/45/17 or Kumho Ecsta MX 245/40/17?

I've used the Falken's on the street and STU last year and like them but these Kumho's show a possible higher grip (AA instead of A) and better tread wear (220 instead of 200) if you can believe the ratings. Anyone run both of these?

Going to order today....

Thanks,

Karl

Everyone in my area seems to be running the RT615s in STU and STX. The only other tires I've seen are the stock RE070s and a few people running Advans, but they are sponsored by Yokohama.

I'm going to stick with the Falkens. Thanks,

The Kumhos are in a different class totally IMO.

A class that sucks.

Kumhos have good stick but they have a wet noodle side wall. For auto-x, Falken RT615's seem to do pretty well. Maybe the Hankook RS-2's would be good also.

Tires for STU, well I ran the yokohama advan neova's last season and they were pretty good (mounted on stock wheel). I bought them slightly used, and this coming season I dont wanna pay the $210 per tire that they are now. A lot of the reason you see people endorsing the neova nationally is because of their contingency plan ($$$ if you win!). However, realistically... I dont think I am doing more than 1 national event this season (wish I could go to nationals... ).

Anyway, that leaves me with the other tires, the RE01R is pretty expensive, however I have heard it got a price reduction.

The other "budget tires" are the falken RT615 (245 width only offered in 245/45 (17" of course). And the hankook rs2 (offered in 245/45 and 245/40). I am leaning to the hankook rs2 in 245/40/17 mounted on a 17x8.5 wheel. I have heard the 245/40/17 version of the RS2 has a bit better sidewall. Anyway, I can get a set of these tires vastly cheaper than the neova's and even save a little bit of money over the RT615. What I have gathered is the Rs2's sidewall is a bit softer than the RT615, however it supposedly has a bit more grip. My hope is to set the car up properly with the RS2 and I think I will have good results, and it should be well worth the $$$ saved by not purchasing the neova.

Thanks for the input guys. Andrew, I'm thinking about stretching the RT615s over a 9 inch wheel which should make up for some of the soft sidewall. I'm probably 2 months away from ordering my coilovers and wheels.
