Default Weight of stock wheels, '04 & '05

This should really be added into the wheel info sticky above.

2004 STI wheel 15 lb 15.2 oz (15.95 lbs)
2005 STI wheel 19 lb 7.7 oz (19.48 lbs)

Measurements taken using a TIF 9010A digital refrigerant charging scale that reads to 1/10 oz, and up to 110 lbs. Accurate to .5% (1.6 oz at 20 lbs)

Holy crap...4lbs difference between the two? I would've guessed much less.

Good work - I guess this will be the official reference point for stock wheel weights until someone comes up with something better.

Makes sense... people underestimate how much weight the 5x114.3 mm bolt pattern adds... usually, going from 7.5 to 8" will add about 1-1.5 lbs, but that bigger center section really drives up the weight, in this case by about 2 lbs.

I weighed my tire wheel and it was 45 lbs... 25.5 for tire, which makes sense at it's current wear point... it started at roughly 27 lbs.

It's about time someone weighed both wheels on a scale and posted them. I had found someone that had posted the 05 weight, but never the 04. Good deal!

Dang, I had no idea the bolt pattern made that much of a difference. I guess what the 04s lack in size they make up for in lack of weight.

Wheel weight and especially tire weight is important to me. I will be weighing some Volk CE28 18" soon (friend bought them).

I weighed a stock tire (Bridgestone REO70) off a 2005 STI that had 9,000 miles ish on it and it weighed in at 25.54 lbs. So 26.5 or 27 could be right when it's new. I have thought of stopping ion at a few dealers and weighing one.

I weighed my Pirelli P Zero Neros (225/45/17) that had 70% tread left and they weighed in at 23.75 lbs.

I took them off to install Conti Extreme Contacts. They weigh a cool 20.34 lbs new.

I end up with a wheel, 225/45/17 tire, valve stem, center-cap, and wheel weight combo that comes in at a hair under 36 lbs. That's almost 9.5 lbs per wheel less than the 05 setup, and most of that weight (6.2 ish lbs of tire) is near the edge. Some have guessed that it's worth 15 hp at the ground.

I posted a bunch of other weights in the lightweight part thread (end of page 3) under the "suspension, handling, stiffening" forum.

Haha cool! That's my winter setup (225/45-17 contiextremes on silver BBS). The car did feel faster the other night, I attributed it to the colder weather...could be the lower rolling resistance too

Too bad they don't grip the same in the corners!

Does this mean that the PFF7s at ~20 lbs is only marginally heavier than the stockers on an 05/06? Maybe the PFF7s could be considered an "upgrade" over the stock BBS?

19lbs is fairly porky for a 17" wheel. Keep in mind that the wider or larger the wheel the greater increase in rotational mass, it's not the dead-weight of the wheel as much as the rotational mass that makes the difference.

If you're in the market, check out our 16.5lbs Rays 57F (cold forged) in 18x8.5 for the 05+ cars. They are far less than what most cast wheels cost.

Cheers

Gary
