Default All Seasons or Winter Tires???

Im in Jersey where its just a crap shoot if we get snow or not. It could be alot of snow nice and deep 5-12 inches couple times or just a dusting of a 2-4 inches a couples times this winter. DOnt know if i should get winter or all seasons. I have Sumitomos on my winter rims right now but they are going bald. They worked realllllly well for the past 3 years even in deep snow better then tire rack said they would. This is where im confused i was gonna get some good all seasons like Pirelli's but on there the comments say they are garbage. Then i Looked at the Bridgestone G009's and it says they are awesome in the snow and on dry and wet. Heres the other option going with a Winter tire. If theres no snow and its just cold is a winter tire good on dry if theres no snow or barely any...????????? HELP

If you have 2 sets of rims then go with a set of winter's on one. They are best for any snow you will come across. I have a set of blizzaks and couldn't be happier with them when going up to the mountains.

it all depends on what your priorities are... there isnt a tire out there that has exellent performance in all conditions. Its just physically not possible. The defining characteristics of a great winter tire are exactly what make a poor summer tire and vice versa. A/S's are an attempt to do well in all categories, but unfortunately do nothing well. They are typically marginal at best in all conditions. If you want to be able to eat up the icy snowy roads it will come at the cost of below average performance on dry roads. I personally choose to have a snow tire and I will see far less snow than you in a typical year. Could I get away with using an A/S? Absolutely, but I wont do it for the same reason that I wouldnt buy an A/S for the track or summer driving. I am willing to sacrifice tearing up the mountain roads for a few months if it means I can get the best performance in the worst conditions. In closing my decision boils down to want vs. need. I want to go fast, but I need to keep my car out of the ditch. I have driven in enough snow/ice to know that an A/S is more likely fail you when you need it the most.

Snow tires are worth it even in a little bit of snow, especially the Blizzaks, improves your braking and all around traction.

I use all seasons and they work fine in the snow. Plus when its not snowing they grip better, and have less road noise then most snow tires. Really depends on how much snow you get...

I'm over in SE PA and I ran Toyo Proxes 4 AS tires all winter last year, they did great in snow and performed decently enough to land me into the 12's.

if you can spare the $$ get the winter tires, they work better when it gets really cold out even if there isn't snow, and if there is snow, you'll be lovin it. You'll also buy tires less often once you get winter tires, so it doesn't really cost much more in the long run.

I'd definately go with snows. Since you'll be driving on dry pavement 85% of the winter in Jersey, I recommend Dunlop Wintersport M3's which perform similarly to the Blizzaks in the snow but are better on dry pavement.

I have the WS-50 on my VW. I swear by them and I'm hooked for life. Going on my third winter with them, and they still look new. Like you, here in Upstate we'll go though weeks of no snow, then we'll get dumped on for a day, and I plowed through it with ease. It's fun passing SUVs in the snow. I picked myself up a winter beater that has some Yokohama winter rubber on it, if they don't perform like the Blizzaks, I'll be throwing on a set of WS-50's.

+1 for Hankook icebears W300. No snow yet but dry and alot of rain. They are good in the dry, i did 110mph this last weekend traveling around northen michigan and it was fine. It has rained alot also and they are better than my summer tires in rain, and they are quiter than my summers. So far so happy. I got them from discount with a $25 & $50 mail in rebate. $678 out the door minus the rebates = $603 with extended warraty.
