TRUE!

this is very easy:

do not use stock tires in the cold, (40ºF or less), or in the snow! get yourself a set of winter tires, good ones since you already have great summer tires!

if you insist on using summer only tires in the winter and wreck your car, you are a

Yea he understands, but there were a few other guys that posted about how it's accecptable to run re070's in the snow. One such guy said they're ok to run in the snow "if you know how to drive." He apparently put 20k miles on them in a Colorado winter.

So he knows how to keep his car out of a ditch. BFD. Anyone who drove a van in the 60's, 70's or 80's knows how to do the same thing. What the maroon didn't say was just how enormous the amount of true quality driving time he throwing away by being so stupid.

Your car is not undrivable, but I wouldn't mind seeing a law passed making pure summer tires illegal in the winter in any state that sees snow. For the rest of my opinion, see sig.

Question Driving in the snow on stock tires

Well, due to my laziness I never got around to buying any all seasons or winter tires and over the last couple of days a foot of snow has fallen over Kansas City. I had heard that the stock tires on my '05 are useless in the snow and I really didn't have much of a choice so I made the trek to work through several miles of unplowed streets.

I have to say, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I experimented with the DCCD, trying auto and varying setings in manual, eventually settling on using "lock" as the car felt the most stable in that mode.

Major issues I had:

1. The car is pretty tough to steer, especially at low speeds. It probably goes without saying that this is due to the tires not being made for driving in the snow. Overall, not the end of the world but definitely made for a few challenging situations.

2. Perhaps more importantly, braking is a nightmare. I have never owned a car with ABS where the rear end would try to kick out when I applied the brakes. I thought this might have had to do with the fact that the DCCD was in "lock" so I dialed it all the way back to 0% lock and still had some issues.

3. The ABS system will allow the brakes to lock up (all four wheels) at very low speeds (under 5-7 MPH or so). This is very disturbing, even my old Neon's ABS wouldn't allow you to lock the brakes up at low speeds. This clearly has nothing to do with the tires. The system simply "gives up" at very low speeds.

Definitely wouldn't recommend driving on the stock tires in snow, but I have to admit it isn't so bad. My last car was an LS1-powered Firebird that also had summer tires on it and I drove it in the snow once. That was probably ten times worse than my STi with summer tires.

Anyone else have any experience with this?

Otis, this belongs in Wheels/Tires. Please post in the correct forum next time. Consider this your first warning.

I have also merged these three threads with the same exact question or subject.

lock usually works best for me in the snow as well. I owned a 2001 neon before the STI and it locked up the abs below 5mph as well.. so don't know where you're getting that from.

My mustang with bald drag radials is about 10x better in the snow then my STi with stock tires.

It is a deathtrap, I just got stuck driving from work the other day in about 1" of snow and my RT615's are just as bad. I would never try to drive in the snow with any performance tire, it just a bad idea

i've given up warning people. if you want to risk destroying your car, killing yourself or someone else, then fine. you should not, under any circumstance, drive the car in the snow on the re070'd
