Been a Colorado snow driver all my life and I know how to drive in the snow and I know limits on summer tires. I tried RE070's in the snow and I came pretty close to hitting a curb going around a corner at a slow speed. Then there was a hill I couldn't make it up. Blizzak's made a huge difference like they always do on all my cars.

If you're traveling on a snow packed highway going 45 in a 55 and there's a wreck in front of you and you have to stop quickly, which would you rather have? Winter tires or RE070's?

Just not worth it. Why risk it?

Sorry, but Colorado is in a class by itself. Winter tires aren't even enough for that environment! Cross country skiiing would be the safest!!!

Those of you who use Continental Conti Extremes (are there any of you out there?), what has been your experience with them as a winter tire? I have them and did fine in my Michigan winter last year, my first winter with the car. However, when I went looking for snow off-road, there were a couple of times when I wished I had Blizzaks on. Blizzaks got me through eight winters with my 95 Impala SS, mildly modified.

Default Dare I ask: Stock Tires in Snow?

Anyone brave enough (edit: "stupid enough") to run the stock Potenza's in the snow? I haven't purchased winter tires yet (financial reasons) and the snow this season is starting to hit us here in S.Jersey.

Is it undrivable?

Are you freaking kidding? IF you had decided to use the search button, you would not have needed to post.

DO NOT DRIVE IN THE SNOW WITH STOCK TIRES... unless you have a serious car destruction/death wish. slicks (more or less) + snow = no traction whatsoever.

I'd tried to tell some guys on nasioc that you cannot drive re070's in the snow. They sort of "ganged up" on me, with the one saying you can do it if you know how to drive. He said something like he put 20k miles on his sti on stock potenzas last winter in Colorado!

Eh, nasioc is beginning to be a lost cause nowadays, and I find myself spending more of my forum browsing here.

Not no, but hell no!

We had our first snow of the season today, and I'm on the RE070's. The problem is that I can't get the tires I want (Dunlop Winter Sport M3's), so I haven't purchased any...stupid.

My car has no problem with going in the snow, it just seems to have issues with stopping, and is NO FUN at all. I might as well have been running on drag slicks.

In all honesty, yes, it is possible to drive the car in snow with the RE070's, but you'll need to go VERY slow, and give yourself 5-times the stopping distance. Oh, and hope like hell you don't get stopped on a hill.

The car may not be undrivable, but it will certainly be impaired.

Packed, granular snow on relatively flat grades will be the best scenario. Wet snow and slush will get problematic very quickly, especially with any kind of grade. Water ice will pretty much shut you down.

Just to give a basic idea: I got comfortable noodling around town on old, granular snow for a few days last year. I had stuff to do, so I figured I'd wait a few days to swap wheels. Then one night we got a few inches of fresh snow, and the temperature came up quickly, so we had four or five inches of slush on the streets. Our house is situated so that you back out of the garage pretty much directly onto a 10% grade, so driving up the hill involves accelerating from a dead stop. On the slush, I was barely able to hold the car's position with the brakes on. I actually could not get from the street back onto the driveway apron that morning (about 10'). I had to park the car and wait for the slush to melt.

Have you ever spun out into wet grass on race tires? It was like that, just not quite as bad. I could push the car (with my hands) perpendicularly to the axis of the tires, though.

Bump. OBVIOUSLY this thread is being missed. I'm thinking we'll see a large influx of wrecked STi parts in the next week or so if this kind of stupidity keeps up.
