Default Official Tire Review Thread - Add your tire reviews today!

So i was just about to post a review on the new set of tires i just got when i thought i might search to see if anyone had done so already. Then it occurred to me that no one has really done a review thread for any tires. I know there are a lot of threads in other sections for reviewing various types of products... why not tires? This way when people search tires they can get a wide span of info/review instead of asking all the time (like me).

Yay or Nay? If not, i guess this will just be my review thread.

I'll start:
$91/tire Kumho Ecsta ASX (SHP All Seasons)
Rated AA - A 460 Tread Ware
Recommended to me by Ikon

Initial impressions: After a week and a half on a spare they seem like the most amazing thing since sliced bread.
- Very quiet (no louder than my last pair of all season or any other tire i've driven)
- Definitely a bit soft on the sidewall and the high tread ware definitely makes for slower turn-in.
- Over all dry feel - i feel pretty confident in them in the dry. I hear they're good in the wet, and so-so in the snow. I'll follow up with this later.
- Negatives: slower turn-in, seem like they will squeal when pushing a corner hard. Waiting to finish break in to test this.

That's all for now. I hope this grows!

Mike

I find most tire reviews (tire rack for example) pretty worthless. I would only put faith in a review if I knew the person reviewing the part had specific knowledge of what makes the part good or bad. Most people, especially in tire reviews, do know much of anything about tires as they rarely change them. They may go through tires every three years and as such as driving on the most worn out POS tires possible. When they switch to something new they think it's great and review it as such, but maybe it is only great in relation to what they are used to and sucks compared to the best.

See what I am getting at?

Agreed Tony. But i mean... people will ask these types of questions regardless. I was thinking of making this thread more of the type of info i posted. I don't really know a ton about what makes a tire a tire... but i think posting up your impressions on noise, handling, etc doesn't hurt.

But what do i know, i'm just one guy.

Anyboooody else?

ASX are a good tire. Dry grip is OK. Very quiet tire. They have OUTSTANDING grip in the rain. If you hit a deep puddle where hydroplaning could happen with a summer tire, these actually create a sensation of sucking the car down onto the road, which is good. Also they allow you to maintain good control at high speeds in the wet. In the snow, they won't dissapoint. good traction and stability in snow just give yourself room to stop. The low price point makes these a must have for STI owners who want an all season tire. Why pay more?

Yeah i've driven them in the rain a few times now, even in a heavy downpoor and they performed very very well. I've put about 600 miles on them and they feel more sollod but are very screechy around turns when you push it.... but they're all seasons.

Update on my Khumos:

These tires are much much more grippy than my last set of no-name all seasons. I feel VERY confident really pushing my car around the corners. I can't compare them to summer tires but for what they are they feel very good.

With the 460 treadware, they definitely give my car a lot more body roll around turns but the grip makes up for it over my last pair.

I give these tires a 10/10 for a great wet/dry grip all season tire on a budget. I can't wait to get them into the snow.

Also these tires are VERY comfortable at high speeds. So far i've taken them up to 150 and they feel great.

BF Goodrich KDW II's. Softer side wall than stock but better traction in the rain and predictablity during hard corning. The right tire presure will give these puppies awesome bite in those curving roads. I will be getting the Dunlop star specs next.

Hell yeah guys. Keep this thread going!

I think this could become a good source for tire noobs (like me) in the future.

Thanks for posting your tires!

I had the ASX in stock size from the day after I bought my 05 (it was in the winter and snowed the day I bought it, had to get the 070s of right away). I never really had a chance to drive w/ the 070's so the ASX were all I knew for a few years.

The best part about them...EXCELLENT treadwear. I put over 30k on mine and had more left. I did get to a point where I couldn't handle the noise though. As they get near the end of their life they got loud for me. That could have been due to alignment issues, but I did rotate regularly and they became noticably louder as they wore more. The car is so much quieter w/ new tires.

Rain / standing water, excellent resistance to hydroplaning. I was really amazed how good they were in that respect. I didn't think they had great wet grip if they were pushed, but for regular driving they were great.

Sidewalls are extremely soft. I put on Wintersport 3d's for the winter and I almost think they had a stiffer sidewall. I didn't realize how soft they were until I put my new wheels on w/ the re050a pole positions. It's night and day. I really felt like the car was extremely sloppy with the asx compared to the 050's. I really wish I went with dedicated winters and dedicated summers right away.

That all being said, if you are on a budget these are great tires. I wouldn't hesitate to put them on a regular passenger car, just wouldn't put them on the STi again.

Pilot PS2 Sport...
I was forced to buy em since my tires blew out and theres 2 options left for my car
A. Yokohama Sdrive
B. Pilot

Sdrive is a downgrade from my stockers so i upgraded to the pilots

Review: Extremely quite on the road! Did some freeway pulls on the tires and they hug the highspeed turns quite well. The launch has lil more peeling out than like and then it grips hard. Almost feelslike my axles are twisting =(
overall: 8.5/10 compared to the re01r
