Default Tire-roar.

So I took my car to CarMax this morning to have it diagnosed and possibly fixed. My mechanic told me that the right rear wheel bearing needed to be replaced. I got a call from carmax earlier saying that everything is fine - since they are aftermarket tires, what we were hearing was just "tire roar." They are bigger wheels. (i think) So what do you guys think? I don't know much about cars so I dont know if Tire Roar is real, or some BS excuse so they didn't have to do work. It was under warranty too.

"Tire roar?" are they talking about road noise? Haha not sure I'd want to have my car worked on there.

No idea. I'd assume thats what they meant. They said that since the tires are bigger than the stock tires, its going to make those noises. What happens is when I am driving and then stop (not suddenly but not slowly) you can hear something still spinning near the wheel. I might sound stupid but thats the best i can explain it.

Need more details. What brand/model tires are they? What size tires? What size wheels? How does the treadwear look? Does the sound definitely seem to come from one particular corner?

From experience I can understand how tire noise can be mistaken for something else. I had Avon M550 tires and they got SO loud. I thought something must be wrong with the car. Wheel Bearing? CV joint? something had to be making all that noise. Well, after reading some reviews where people stated the tires were loud, I replaced them with Falken Ziex-912's. It was like riding in a new car. All the noise was gone. So, it may just be tire noise, and if you can answer the questions above, we'll be able to narrow it down.

I just got home from work. I'll check what tires they are tomorrow when I go outside to wash it. I'm not too car smart and when I bought the car they were on there. I don't even know what size either.

They all sound like they have bad wheel bearings.... try a set of tires off your granmaws buick. if it still sounds like sheet then check the bearings and thank your sorry ass you don't drive a Buick The new BFG KDW2's were deleciously loud on my 06 ! That is why I quit Buicks. Just got an 08 with the less than stellar tires supplied and my bearings sound bad. ... hmm all kidding aside how do you tell? I apologize I am not sure other than to try Street tires. The reality of these cars is the rubber mounted is loud. Oh Well...!
Seriously though most HP cars that run decent rubber are loud. It can be a bit disconcerting wondering if you are hearing things, or is there a problem. I should think I might be worrie if there is more sound from one corner than another. I don't know what your mechanical background is but if you feel the bearings without the wheels 'feel like' you might get a clue. For the most part unless your car has a lot of miles on it you should be fine.

Cheers,

Larry

All the bad bearings I've heard have made a "groaning" or "howling" sound.

You can do a simple check by jacking up the car and pulling the wheel up in/out and checking for any play (shouldnt have any)

What kind of car are you coming from?

What kind/size of tires are on the STi?

Finally, at the end of the day, who do you believe -- your mechanic, or Carmax?
