Default Need advice on HPDE/Auto X tires

Whats up guys, I just got my Sti a month ago, and Im going to be doing quite a few HPDE and Auto-x's this season. Im planning on running Enkei RPF-1's, probably going to get them from tire rack in 17*8 +45. Any suggestions on good tires to run? I really don't care about what class I'm in for either HPDE or Auto-x because I'm doing this for pure pleasure, so anything goes. Im trying to keep it under $200 a tire and I want to get a whole season out of one set.

Im thinking Toya RA-1?

And on a side note, would there be any advantage to an 18inch rim as opposed to a lighter 17inch rim (both RPF-1)?

have you ever done a track day or auto-x? If not i would definitely recommend sticking with street tires. Street tires will allow you to improve you driving skills much quicker whereas the extra grip r-comps have won't allow you to see mistakes you may be making.

For street tires i would recommend the stock RE070's, RE01R's, or the Star Spec Z1's.

Yea I have done quite a few auto-x's, only one HPDE so far. I did a few with the BMW-CCA and the Northern NJ M-club. Only one so far has been in the Sti though. I was thinking about the Star Spec 1's, they seem to be very popular lately. One of the reasons I was thinking Toyo RA-1 was because I heard its the sanctioned tire for most SCCA events. I know this might be a noob question but would the Star Spec 1 come close to having the kind of grip an RA-1 would have in dry weather? Lol and the plus of running Star Spec 1's would be that I could roll on my Enkei's around town a bit :-)

nitto nt01 very consistent and dont have to worry about tire temp( high operating temp). 169 bucks for 245/45/17. R compound is more fun. If you have spare rims get R compound

r comps will put you in a different class i believe.

the star specs seem popular now... yes, but seem expensive and wear pretty easily.

most people i see at auto-x run rt615 azenis... you cant get falken tires on tire rack though. you can get them cheap.

Decided to go with the Toyo R888. Now I just have to figure out what size to get for the 17inch RPF-1's.

depends on your suspension.

the 04 can't run anything wider than a 225/45/17 on that size Enkei without modifying the rear fenders (or having a stiff coilover to keep the tire off the fender).
