Default 225/50 R17 on an 07' STi?

Hello All,

I'm searching for a simple way to increase ground clearance for my 2007 STi. Wouldn't you know whether a little higher then stock tire would fit it and not rub? I'm thinking about an 225/50 R17 as opposed to a stock 225/45 R17. This would increase the sidewall height from 10.13 cm to 11.25 cm, thus an increase of 1.12 cm (0.44 in) of ground clearance.

Thank you,
Oxy-

what are your suspension mods?

with a tire that is nearly 1" tall you do run the risk of rubbing on numerous places, including the fender wells and more likely the spring perches.

especially with the high offset of the stock wheels.

subiecop was running 225/50R17 snow tires with his H-tech springs, but I do not remember if he had any rubbing. I don't think he did.

it's possible, once again offset is going to play a huge roll in this case.

due to the design of the spring perch and its location.

The Subaru I drive is completely stock. Did the H-tech springs lowered the car?

Thank you for your replies.

245/45/17 = 25.7" dia
225/50/17 = 25.9" dia

245/45 works absolutely fine on a stock car. I would not expect you to have any issues.

stick a finger between the spring perch and the top of the tire.

there isn't alot of room there.

I'm not saying there is less than .1"

OP, just try it out, and if it doesn't fit sell the tires to someone who uses that size normally.

You've mentioned the high wheel offset. Is it possible to change it? Or what is the simple way to increase the ground clearance? I've seen there are such "strut spacers"...

you could run spacers, but to do that safely you need wheel studs and it'd be easier/smarter to just buy new wheels with a lower offset.

besides going to coilovers there isn't much you can do on an 07.

i wouldn't run any sort of strut spacer on a stock strut STi.

how much ground clearance are you looking for?

why do you need more ground clearance?

Hm..

I'm looking for a 0.4" - 0.8" increase of the clearance.

yeah there is probably less than 1/4". But the 225s are (theoretically) also a lot narrower than the 245s. 10mm less width on the inside should more than make up for the extra .1" height as far as clearing the perch.

Austinpike, are you running 245/45 R17 currently? Have you got any rubbing on hard cornering?

Yes, I'm running 245/45 Azenis. No rubbing, ever.

Not trying to steal the thread, but I have my car at the dealership and have to put tires on it before my way back and was just thinking which size. If you had to choose would you go
245/45/17
or
245/40/17?

40 should provide stifer sidewall by being slightly shorter. 98mm (3.9") against 110mm (4.3").
Also after picking size, would you go

RE-01R
or
NT01 by NITTO?

I don't care about wet traction. It's hardly ever raining here.
