Default Doh! The price of RE01R's keep going up (245/40/17)

Tirerack has the re01r in 245/40/17 for $228 each. I remember just a few months ago they were around $178 or so. I guess it serves me right for waiting so long. Now these tires are almost the same price as the Yokohama Advan AD07 which are $236.
Which tire should I get? Or should I just get the re01r in 245/45/17 for $177 each? I was told the 245/45 will rub with my mods.
I also have someone who could get me the BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KD for only $150 per tire. Does this tire come close to performance level as the re01r or ad07? I care mainly about track performance.

Star Spec Z1's are supposed to be good.

I just got 245/40/17 RE01Rs on an 04 with RCE blacks and like 1.5 neg camber, so we'll see if its gonna rub when I put them on.

you should buy summer tires in winter months.

the Star Specs are Autox Proven but not track day proven yet.

if you're going between the RE01R and AD07 for track days i think the RE01R would handle the heat a little better.

what are your mods and what wheels will these go on?

petroleum prices drive tire prices up

Unfortunately I am on the stock 04 rims which are 7.5 in. I am on JDM pink springs with RCE lowering camber plates. I am currently on the stock Evo tires (advan a046) and I rub a little in front at the track. I guess the springs are too soft for that type of driving.
It seems that with my mods, the tires are the only thing i want to improve.
Fyi, my alignment is -2.5 up front, -1.7 rear, 0 toe.

if you're rubbing with a 235/45/17 you may want to step down to a 225/45/17.

either in the AD07 or RE01R.

I was afraid of that. I was hoping to increase my overall grip with the 245/40 because that is my weakest link right now. How much of a difference in grip will there be between a 225/45 and a 245/40? I really only rub on one section of the track that is a long sweeper with a lot of camber (they call it the fish bowl).

Have you rolled your fenders yet? That will allow you to run wider tires?

Not yet, but i don't rub on the outside. I only rub on the inside fender liner.

it depends where you're rubbing on the inside liner.

it's possible you're rubbing b/c the 235/45/17 is too tall for your setup.

dropping down to a 245/40/17 would create a shorter overall diameter...although on a 7.5" wheel it may not be a good idea.

also the stock +53mm offset is rather high and can create issues when lowered as much as you are (pinks + lowering plates).

are you willing to roll the rear fenders and buy some new wheels with a lower offset?

Here is an old thread I started that has pics of where it is rubbing.
Should I cut the fender liner?

I am acutally considering doing a hub swap because my bearings keep going out and my warranty is almost up. If I do the hub swap, I will most likely go with coilovers and some new wider rims. The coilovers should stiffen things up to help prevent the rub.
I want to go as wide as possible if I invest in new rims.

sounds like a plan.

do the hub swap and for the time being run a 225/45/17 tire just to keep you occupied.

lets chat about suspension/wheel setups for the hub swap. shoot me a pm.

I will definitely talk to you re: the hub swap setup.

In the meantime, you don't recommend using a 245/40 on my 7.5in rims? I was really looking forward to getting more grip than what I was getting with my A046's.

You should be fine running 245/40/17 tires on 7.5" wheels. After all, that's what the 05-06 STU national champ ran. Should help with your rubbing issue as well since they are shorter like others have said.
