Default Anyone drive to the track on R compund tires?

(that would be R compound tires) Just curious what tire pressure people run for the lower temps on the street/highway? Factory, more, less? All of my past cold/hot tire pressures are of no use to me anymore as this will be my first event not running on street tires.

I have driven to and from the track on full tread RA1s. I have only done it once and it was a cool wet day so the tires didn't wear much at all. On shaved tires or more slick like r-comps, like Hooiser, Kumo, BFG R1, I wouldn't do it. Just adds to the heat cycles and I would think it would decrease the lifespan of the tire.

Do it all the time, in fact I'm on RA-1's right now for just street tires. They seem like they last forever. I wouldn't worry about it.

Its not a question of whether to do it or not, but how. I understand its not ideal, but its the choice that best fits my budget/car/interest level.

I'm wondering what I should set the pressures to for the highway drive. At the track, I set my cold pressures pretty low because the track brings them up with all the heat put into them. Should I set them to stock pressures? Part of the reason I'm a little preoccupied with this is my alignment is as aggressive as it can be for track/daily driver double duty. I'm only at -1.5 camber front/rear which sounds like its a little low to keep outer should wear in check.

it really depends how far you're driving on them.

if you're going 5 miles then i wouldn't worry about it, just set them at normal street temps (assuming you're using a tire similar to the NT01, RA1, A048, R888).

I wouldn't run a Hoosier or V710 on the street for more than a few blocks.

the biggest issue with driving the r-comps on the street is if you do drive them on the street everyday AND to the track they will start to get hard due to the large amount of heat cycles.

if you only drive to the track you're basically heat cycling the tires 3 times instead of 1 (or 5 instead of 3 if you do 3 sessions that are far enough apart).

so they will be at peak performance for much less time.

which R-comps were you thinking of doing this with?

I have done it a few times but if you can avoid it you should. I recently put a hitch on my car and got a small trailer for my tires and other equipment, it should make bringing my stuff to the track much easier.

Dan, make sure you ALWAYS have weight on the trailer (lots of it), and cross those chains!

it's not fun having a trailer fall off

Yeah the only time I will use it is when it has 4 wheels/tires on it plus a box full of stuff.

+1 for trailers or wheels hitch's. As for tire pressures I'd also use nitrogen to help fight rising psi during run sessions. The psi won't change nearly as much from hot to cold temps..

but who carries nitrogen with them to the track in the event you want higher pressures?

plus air is free!!

I do A craftmans tank cost $20 from sears. I freaking love it. I can change my pressures at home if I feel like it. Worth every penny IMO. Then the tank just stays with the rest of the stuff at the track. And I can add and take as I please, without leaving my bay. I like the idea and think anyone who tracks their car enough should use one. It carrys enoung to fill up 4 completely flat tires.

Anyone driving behind you if you're on Hoosiers is going to hate you. You'll pick up every rock in the road and throw it in their windshield.

RA-1's are definately streetable if the climate is warm enough. They are very slippery around 60 degrees (a cool morning), and like ice below 50 degrees (a Spring/Fall morning). Seriously, be careful- they are AWFUL at these temperatures. I'm sure many other high-temp tires are the same way.

I use RA-1s on the back of my Corvette, street only, stock pressure. They last about 6,000 miles (about one year) and stick like glue down to the last useable rubber.

The weather was nice and no rain, tires were fine on the highway, loud, but no other issues. I set the pressure to the stock cold settings. As far as the track, wished I was running a little more negative camber in the front to help with wear, but I'm about as far as I want to go w/o sacrificing wear on the street tires. I kept the hot pressures around 40psi front and rear.

ive done it many times,, but in so cal the weather is almost always dry and nice. but i have run them in the rain at the track and on the street, the TOYO RA1s are great, tire pressure depends on weather and distance im driving , mine are unshaved, unlike how i like my women, but now are about down to a shaved depth. its ok to run them on the street, but i try not to only for the fact that they pick up rocks and sling them at others on the freeway.. that tends to piss people off.
