Default Is this fixable? nail in tire

Saw this yesterday when I was in the parking garage. Passenger side front, about 3/4 inch from the sidewall. Is this patchable/pluggable or am I going to have to fork over 200 for a new tire? Tires have only 6K miles on them.

I've never owned a 4WD vehicle before, is this going to cause any issues if I have to replace the tire?

Easily fixable. Most places will either do it for free or next to nothing. Don't sweat it man.

That's pretty close to the sidewall, meaning they are going to want to plug it, which with a Z rated tire is a big no no. If they can't patch it then don't plug it, and if you do plug it don't push your speeds above highway speeds.

I have never heard of a problem with a patch or a plug on any tire at any speed. If it wasn't safe then shops wouldn't do it. Period. Do you really think a shop would leave themselves open for that kind of liability? Really this is the type of question you need to go to a professional (tire shop) instead of a bunch of amateurs (internet) As you can see you already have conflicting info. I still say that should be an easy fix for any shop....

Nope I wouldn't call you a professional either.

Heres a product service bulletin about repairing speed rated tires. It is from Goodyear, not Bridgestone, but I would imagine the policies would be similar.

Goodyear: U.S. Government Sales - Police Tires

Yes, you can repair speed rated tires with a puncture in the tread area.

Again only the professional who is going to do the repair can make the final determination. I am still guessing it will be fine and you should definetely ask about it before just buying new tires.

I never said it couldn't be done, I said don't let them do it with just a plug. Even the method you linked uses a plug/patch combo. The problem I for see the OP running into is they may not be able to get a patch on that close to the sidewall, which in-turn may drive them to just try and plug it and that is still a no no for a Z rated tire.

Plug it and call it a day. As long as it is not IN the sidewall you will be fine.

I had that exact same thing happen to me and I plugged it. I've plugged probable 10 tires in the last 10 years so I'm no expert, but that tire is tough to plug. The tread wall is super stiff and the belting is very tightly woven. It took all 200 pounds of me, and lots of cursing, to wrestle that plug in there! After is was in there was 100% no leak, but it did have an odd vibration from then on out. Just my 2 cents.

I hate to break it to you, but thats probably not fixable.

The reason is the nail is too close to the sidewall. On the inside of the tire at that spot, the tire material is flexing/curved. I had a tire shop try and patch it, and they simply couldn't, it leaked air after doing the patch using a bubble test.

I just had a nail right in that spot on both my rear left AND rear right. Was a *****, I just ended up buying two new RE-01R's, and putting them up front. (sti front heavy = make them wear quicker to even out to the rears)

i think the general rule is the hole should be at least 1 inch from the sidewall to patch it patches are better than plugs but i have used plugs for 20 yrs never had a failure or even a blow out or horriable accident and have plugged plenty of z rated tires and then drove way too fast with them the problems i have had with a plug close to the sidewall is it does'nt hold forever usally just long enough to wear the tire out and need to replace it can't say if you should or should not but you can for sure
