Is it worth it to powder coat some goldies?? How difficult is it to do it?

There has been speculation that powdercoating forged wheels sacrifices the structural integrity of the actual wheel. If there is truth to this, I have no idea...just throwing it out there.

IMO, just paint them. Save a lot of money, and the possibility of the above scenario.

It's probable only about 200-250 to blast and powdercoat your wheels. It will look a lot better in the long run. I'm not sure if it harms the structural integrity of the wheels though.

if you have a shop that knows what they are doing powdercoat the wheels the structural integrity will not be diminished. There are certain powdercoat powders that are more expensive but they cure a temperatures that is very low in comparison to typical powder coats. Just ask the shop thats powdercoating what their cure temps are.

im getting my wheels coated next week. today i went to specialized in huntington beach and had a good talk with one of the shop guys.

he said hes only ever had a problem with wheel damage on one set of wheels. this occurred when the strippers, not the specialized (powder coaters), dipped the wheels in some uberhot (450+) acid bath crap to strip it. then the wheel was coated. when the customer got the wheel back, they were unable to balance the wheel.

he said they do hundreds of wheel sets annually and have never had a problem due to the powder coating process. including high end exotics and track cars.

personally, after the conversations ive had with several shops and people who have had theirs coated, i feel comfortable with the process.

you will always be able to find someone with a horror story. keep in mind that their conditions might be entirely different than yours and so your best comfort can be found through doing research until your satisfied you have enough information to make a decision.

give them a call and ask away.

you guys have to keep in mind it isn't a matter of falling off, its the matter or cracking or break like rotas do . No you probably won't experience this much during daily driving, unless you live in PA or NY where potholes are extremely prevalent. I guarentee you if you ask any materials engineer about it, they would recommend against what the shop is doing. If you understand the forging process and understand the powdercoating process you will see what MOST powdering coating processes aren't good.

OP, its all your call though. Plenty of people do it and don't have problems.. but then again so do people that buy rotas.. and some just have their wheels shatter, lol.

Any rim can crack or bend if it hits a brutal enough pothole, curb, whatever. Doesnt matter if they are forged, cast, one piece, two piece, etc.

The heat involved in powercoating is not enough to mess with the temperment of a forged wheel. Its all an urban legend.
