Because of your requirement #3, go with the 070's....I'm in the minority regarding the 01r's though (many people love them and seem to swear by them)....just my .02.

1. but money is a factor ( if I buy new, either 01r or 615 )
2. I don't see used 070 tires now
3. I absolutely do not want to lose lateral handling- which is perfect for me w 070's
4. Wear- cost ratio is a curiosity - are the 615's cheaper per mile or either of the Bridgestones 01r or used 070's? If the verdict is stock- where can they be found?

My hunch is the stock 070's sidewall is what I heavily rely on
but how can I know without driving the other two most popular tires here?

Please help even though I can't afford to race!
thanks so much

I just purchased the Yokhama S Drive tire. They are a summer tire that cost around 130 a piece. Yes, they don't have as stiff a sidewall as the 070's but hell there isn't a tire that does, in my opinion. These are great in the rain as well. They ride better and do perform great! If your car is a daily driver, and you still want some summer performance, these have been awesome. I have found these better than the Falken FK 452.

Unfortunately I don't have a local supplier for Yokahama tires.

How about the Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport? It only costs $128 a piece for 225/45ZR17 and has a 330 tread rating.

If I were you I'd try to come up with the cash for some new 070s. Nothing else works better on a stock car. You know you like them already. Apply for a Subaru credit card and earn some Subaru bucks when you order them from tire rack..

Is it a hassle to get the road protection deal from tirerack?
I mean Discount Tire takes care of that locally !
I assume I need the road protection plan?

Used 070 is what I did last year.
Where in tarnation are they??

Sorry bout all the little questions!
Thanks

About $775 shipped, but it depends where you are. You can check this on tirerack.com. Installation should be about $60 and then you're set. You know the tires are in new and equal condition. I'm not sure about road protection. I think it's about $80 but I skipped it. Unless it's sidewall damage you can patch most punctures for $20. Good Luck

I live in sunny San Diego

So I guess it is tough to find used ones?

There is a member here who said if lateral handling is important to me, stick to stock

Those of you who love another tire replacement
Did you compare the OEM 070 with the replacement in terms
of sharp go cart like turn in traits?

I hope this relentless examination helps others here as well

I have never seen another tire that had the sidewall stiffness of the 070. I think if you get anything else you will be disappointed.

I'm replacing a set of balding KDW's with a set of Kuhmo ecsta SPT's....a "step down"; they're on the cheaper end at about $100 a tire, have gotten pretty good reviews as a dry and wet summer tire, and I'll be using them for DDing with the occasional spirited adventure.

RE01r is a great tire, no question.

08 STi's don't come with the 070 anymore, so you probably are not going to see any more take offs.

RE01r has better lateral grip than the 070s. The 070's have a pretty much solid sidewall - that translates into better turn-in and responsiveness. It has nothing to do with grip. Hosiers have practically no sidewall and nobody questions their lateral grip compared to the 070s. Another side effect of the super stiff sidewall is road noise.
The 01r doesn't have as stiff a sidewall as the 070's, so the feel at turn-in is a bit looser, but they corner as well or better than the 070's, and generate less noise in daily driving.

I can't comment on wear - outside of the wear encountered at the track. The RE01r appear to have handled the stress a bit better than the 070's and had less chunking at the edges of the tread blocks than the 070s.

You will lose some feel changing from the 070's, no matter what tire you go with. The 070 has the stiffest side wall of any tire on the market. Don't confuse that with the actual handling. As far as peak grip goes, you can't go wrong with the 01r. What you gain (traction and lower noise) more than makes up for what you lose: a slight reduction in turn-in feel.

NOTE:
I have 10miles on 070s, and one track day.
I have 2K miles on 01rs, and two track days.

Do you have a discount tire near by? They will match anyone's price, plus you get free rotation and balancing. Discount tire does carry Yokohama and they can get the Bridgetsone's. I agree that the 070 is the stiffest side wall on the market, but if you car is a daily driver and you want a litte more mileage out of them and some better road manners the Yok's are a great tire.
They are predictible when it comes to handling.
