Default So I just ordered some Pilot Sport PS2s in 235...

I just ordered some new Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s to be mounted on my stock wheels pretty soon. I've only got about 20,000 miles on my car now, but the stock RE070s seem to be getting close to the end of their life. Maybe I'll take some pics and post them here, but I'm not really sure how they should look or how many more miles I can take them before they become unsafe, what kind of mileage have you guys seen? I drive aggressively and push the tires sometimes, but never tracked the car or anything.

I'm just wondering how many of you guys are running the Michelins and how you like them. I've read that the stock RE070s and their stiff sidewall compliment the STi well, so I'm not sure how the PS2s compare. The reason I didn't want to get a new set of the Potenzas is I'm looking for better wet performance and hydroplaning resistance along with less road noise, and, to a lesser extent, maybe a bit softer of a ride as the tires wear out.

PS: Anyone know how the weight of the two tires might compare?

I had PS2s for awhile, 235/45/17, they were great in the rain and a much softer/quieter ride, but you can practically put your finger through the sidewall. According to Tirerack they are 22lbs, vs 27lbs for the RE070, which is nice, but obviously that 5lbs has to come from somewhere.

The change in turn-in response just really surprised me, it went from instant with the 070's, to turn the steering wheel, wait... now the tires catch up.

For the requirements you listed, it is a great tire, I wouldn't hesitate to put them on a daily driver at all. I just didn't particularly care for the way they made the car feel.

I'd hate to sacrifice cornering and feel just to have a more "comfortable" tire. Would I be better off looking at a set of Bridgestone Potenza RE050As? I'd rather keep the harsh ride and great turn-in but still find something that isn't as prone to hydroplaning.

Does anyone have any other suggestions to consider that would be less of a compromise? I wish I could just try a bunch of these out before I bought them.

Advan neova ad07. Freaking love them. They too have a pretty hard sidewall. But I also noticed a reduction in road noise about 10%. They dont screech when heated up either, more so slide like a r comp. IMO Wet grip MUCH better than the stockers. Havnt had them on the track yet, but soon will.

I've had PS2 on my 04 STI for about 10,000 miles, love the quieter and more comfortable ride. They did seem a little bouncy at first, but turn in responce and handling improved when I pumped up the tire presures to 38-40 PSI.
The Bridgestones and Yoko Advan's had too stiff a sidewall to be a reasonable DD in my opinion.
Can't wait for my TIC coilovers to arrive to make it handle and ride even better!

I assume the PS2 don't wear especially well
therefore they are at least as expensive as OEM tires

I'm not sure what you mean, But the ps2 have a higher tread rating so they should last longer then the stock tires

Those treadwear numbers do NOT apply across different companies ratings- Isn't that special !

I thought I heard that the Michelin PS2 wore fairly quickly- similar to 070?
Michelin are great tires, so correct me please

I meant $ per mile, the Michelin are more expensive. I really liked Michelin in the past. The original kick butt tire company

My cousin owns a tire shop, so I had him look at my tires. He said I still had a bit of life left in them, so I have some more time to figure out what new tires to get when the time comes. I'm still not sure what I'm going to go with.

Hey Austin

What was the load index of the PS2 you were using - 91Y or 95Y? 95Y is extraload which suggests has pretty stiff sidewalls. Im looking at replacing my Zero Corsas, also 95Y, with these tyres hence am interested for more feedback also.

Thanks

I don't recall, I don't think they had an XL version when I got them. I would definitely go that route if it is an option.

They are far more comfortable, far less noisy, with slightly less turn-in and overall dry grip - it ain't all that much, but there is a small difference. In the wet, they are way, way better than the 070's - on wet roads, much less standing water, the 070's are almost dangerous. As far as longevity goes, ask me in another 20K miles: I've only got about 5K on them so far and they look barely scrubbed, but I also run a lot of negative camber too so they are wearing pretty evenly.
