Default RE070 vs RE01R

So there seems to be many people who say the RE01R is stickier than the RE070...

I have not tried both, but I'm wondering if the RE01R is sticker at colder temps (street driving) but the RE070 handles heat better and generates a faster lap time once the tires are warmed up on the track over 2-3 laps.

Can anyone comment on lap times, who has experience with both?

Default Re: RE070 vs RE01R

I've run both at the autocross. My first season in a street tire stock class I ran the Falken 615 great tire lasted long but doesn't have close to the grip of the RE070 it was about 1 second off the RE070. This season I tried the RE01R and the RE070 I found I was about 1/2 second faster on the same 60 second course with the RE070 vs the RE01R.

I'm running stock suspension so that means I can't get much camber out of the front. The class goes by the SCCA Astock just with street tires. The nice thing about the RE070 is the stiff side wall it has I think it works better with stock suspension then the softer side wall of the RE01R. My plan now is to switch to the RE070 that comes on the new S2000 it comes in 255 so I can get more tire to the ground. I should note with both the Falkens 615 and the RE01R I was running a 245/40 17 tire.

I have both.
01r's are miles better in the wet.
A more comfy tire for street use.
A little better in the dry.
I have six trackdays on the 070's with life left.
Very predictable at the limit, real talkers.
I have r compounds for track use now so i have yet to try them out.
Going to Watkins this weekend if it rains i will use them.
Either way you can't lose.

mmmmm....255 RE070s on RG2's

On the topic of RE070's, are the 255/40/17 RE070's currently being sold?

I think Tire Rack already has them. I'm going to try and put them on the stock rim since I can't change the rim size in Astock.

0he re-01r's are going to handle heat better. While the RE070's are in their heat range, they are gonna kick ass, when they get a bit hot...they get greasy as hell. The 01r's can take a few more laps before things start to get slippery.

So the RE070's are the grippier tire... at least up to about 60 seconds of punishment, even in the narrower width.

Swine, you feel the 01R's keeping hold a little longer as the rubber temp rises? I would have guessed it would be the other way around. Have you timed your laps? I'm not doubting you, but I can say that we can't judge a lap time by feel, when you are talking 1 second or less... only Schumy can do that

I use Hoosier R6's for timed track competition, but also need a street alternative for running a 2nd class. (140+ treadwear) I need the tires to be at max grip around the 4-5 minute mark.

I'm just assuming the RE070 is closer to R comp due to the 140 treadwear vs 180 for the 01R. (which may or may not be a completely false belief)

The 01R seems to have a similar tread compound but softer sidewalls and smaller tread blocks. To me this has had exactly the results that one would expect - it has similar grip but more squish but better wet-traction...

I am refering to track driving, not auto-x.

Obviously it depends on the ambient and track temp that day. I was running the RE070's in high 80's heat in August with direct sunlight on the track. After 4 or so laps the re070's started getted real slick and not responding to steering input.

I dont know if the RE-01r's are actually any faster when heated to excess temps(i felt the 01r's were quicker after 4-5 laps had gone by), but they are much more consistent, steering feel remains same/similar even with a fair amount of laps on them. No timed laps, just my opinion. I could be completely wrong.

Turn in obviously always feels better on the 070's thanks to its bad ass sidewalls.

I would liken the re01r to a Kumo Mx...only a fair amount quicker...with a stiffer sidewall.

interesting, looking at the Falken 615s since they are very reasonably price. RE070 is a bit expensive but would it make sense to spend a little more and go for the Advan Neovas instead?

Take the 01r give it a bit stiffer sidewall and a bit more grip and you have a neova. In the correct operating temps the 070 is still faster...the problem is keeping the 070 in the temp range.

Fyi, i currently have two sets of Neova's, so i am biased.

Mxpop has won numerous "street class" races with the re01r's. He chose those over any other tire...that in itself should tell you something.
