Default What does it mean to "Pull the Fenders" ?

Ive heard of people talking about rolling fenders.
But what does "pulling" the fender actually mean.
Whats the process involved?

I am by no means an expert, but as far as I know:

Rolling = bending the small lip out of the way - the lip that curls underneath the fender.

Pulling = imagine grabbing your fender with two hands, and start pulling outwards - basically that, but a tad more precise.

the term pulling isn't b/c of the process, it's more b/c the after result looks like you "pulled" the fender outward.

when all reality you generally push it outward with either a fender roller, hammer.

it depends on the car as to which process works best.

lol, that's massive!

Here's a more common pull. Much milder, but still enough to fit some wide wheels.

Hypa, that looks pretty good.

what technique did you use?

roller, hammer, hands, bat, stiff shoe, neighbors head?

hypa did you remove the fender arch first, or pull everything together as a unit?

yeah, VW and Audi guys love pulled fenders so they can get more stretch and poke.

sorry for the delay guys, I've been waiting on parts and haven't looked at the car for a while.

t3h clap, I used a number of tools, starting with the fender rolling machine, and finally moving on to a die grinder with carbide tip. I found that you can't go very far with the rear roll due to the sever stiffness in the rear fenders of the 05+ STi. I ended up just removing the flare (breaking a couple of the clips in the process) and drilling out the spot welds.

This was an early picture. As you can see, the fender "waves" because of the stress of the pull, and the spot welds. Once I drilled out he welds, I was able to smooth the metal.

Problem is, once the metal pulls out and is rewelded, it sticks out too much causing the flare to not sit flush. That's where the carbide bit came into play, allowing me to cut off the "flared" metal so the flare could sit flush.

I learned a lot doing this project. In the future, I would gently roll the fender so it flares just a bit, but focus more on cutting the rears. The areas that rub/cut the tire are near where the bumper meets fender, and need more time spent on them.

I have some new flares coming in next week from Subiegal.
I'll be sure to take some pics when it's all done.

On a side note, the fron was easy to make fit.

I tried pulling everything together, but that just made a mess of the clips. I recommend pulling off the fender arch (flare as I called it in the last reply) as it will ensure that you don't accidentally break the mounting clips while pulling the fender.

Be careful though, as the mounting clips are really weak.

when pulling off the "flare" you basically need to assume you're going to need new ones.

Do you have to replace the whole flare.... or, can you buy the clips separate?

**cough** cough** hack **

thanks for the pics. when you described the ideal method after doing this once, do you mean remove the arches, and then use a die grinder to cut away the fender, then re-install a new set of arches?

I'm just curious how your paint wasn't demolished with the carbide tip and die grinder combo!

Also do you mind sharing your rear camber specs?
