Default RE960 all-season tire review part 1 (when winter is over)

For those looking at this tire:

I live in PA where ice and snow are common. We don't get burried like in some places but it was a decent amount this year. Temperatures

Snow/Ice grip:
The tire has pretty good traction when accelerating from a stop. But our cars have AWD so that helps a lot. However it is very easy to break the rear loose even when going in a straight line if you just step on the gas a little. The car will fish tail making the nose point to upcoming traffic because the tail will swing to the ditch.

When turning into a driveway w/o gas the tire can't hope to hold the heavy nosed sti. It goes wide. I've driven with snow tires in other cars, so I know that this is not really a good snow tire. But I'd take then anyday over the re070.

Wet and Cold grip:
When the snow melts or we get crazy rain, this is where the tire shines. My car take off the line like a mofo and turns like a mofo. Take this into perspective, the bounds are much closer than you think compared to dry, but the tire bumped my confidence +3 as supposed to before. On the freeway, hydroplane resystance is great.

Dry grip (cold)
Acceptable. The tire is quite soft compared to the RE070. I cannot say how much I miss the way my sti felt in the summer with the RE070. If you wonder what the difference is:
-The car feels wiggly. I accelerate out of a gas station and I don't feel confident. It "almost" wants to break the rear out, but I know where the bound is so stop pushign it.

-Do a zig zag on your RE070 at 35 mph and your friends will be blown away by your cars grip. Do that on the 960s and you can hear them cry.

Understeer:
When accelerating in a freeway ramp I noticed the car starts to wash out. I don't like that.

Dry grip (60f)
I have to say the warmer it gets the more I think they don't work with our cars on the dry. This is obvious you say, since it is an all season...but I thinkt he sti just has too much power for this tire and the tire doesn't make enough contact (I have the stock 225 size).

My next tire will probably still be an all season tire but I'll go for more with a little more dry performance and contact surface. Maybe even try 235 or 245.

Anyways just thought I'd share for those of you considering this tire. If I lived in the north west where it rains like every day, it would be my #1 choice.

Northwest FTW!
Heh. Cool, thanks for the post, LSE. It backs up what I have seen/heard, despite being the best ranked tire for a high perf A-S tire by Tire Rack.
A friend of mine went from the PZero A-S's to the RE960's (partly on my recommendation and a tech from Tire Rack).
His take? "They're okay, but I wouldn't buy them again". His complaints were similar to yours; the car washes out in curves, wallows in corners and just doesn't feel confidence-inspiring.
My guess is that the PZero All Season's have a much stiffer sidewall and feel more like our OEM Bridgerocks.

Funny- I figured these would be a better fit for you guys in the NE or somewhere where snow traction was more of a concern... (although same could be said for those in the NW, over the mountains and on the Eastern side...)
