I work at a dealership and was pretty close to painting my BBS wheels with spray paint and clearcoat before I was talked outta it by some coworkers. They suggested powdercoating and I know there has to be somebody whose down it on a silver BBS but I've also read that powdercoating a forged wheel isn't such a good idea.

I know lots of people have posted their experience but I was told that a few months down the road no matter what the spray paint will start to chip with any amount of clearcoat applied. It's not like people out there are giving updates on their sprayed wheels but why would they if everything looks peachy keen or is chipped to hell?

they've chipped a little bit but nothing really bad. it's bound to happen eventually

Don't powdercoat the stockers. They are forged and it destroys the structure of the metal when you heat em in the powdercoating process. Could you get away with it? prolly but I wouldn't want a wheel to crumble at high speeds!

Im pretty sure this is covered and to the post above mine^ ive read that it depends on the temperature they are baked at. Many of them are baked at a low enough degree to not do any damage at all.

im curious about this issue as well with thinking about powder-coating my stockers. hearing this about the process potentially affecting the structure of the wheel itself is kind of discouraging now. as far as for the chips, im sure that it would just be a matter of allowing brake dust to accumulate and covering them up and making them unoticeable_lol

Painting is all in the prep work; if you want it to last get them bead-blasted first so the paint has a clean surface to adhere to. Hand sanding or "scuffing" them takes forever and won't get close to the same effect.

There is always another option. Getting them painted professionally would give you a much more durable paint job then spray paint, without the issues associated with powder coating. Just my $.02

well professionals do the powdercoating as well. but painting them is more an advantage than powdercoating?

If you want to maintain the structure of your wheel.. yes a bit more money and a professional paint job would last longer, be safer, and look better imo.

I know I wouldn't want a wheel to crumble at high speeds. Life is priceless my friend, our cars need to be respected

It would prob cost a ton more...,

in theory it is correct with the structure, but i have only heard of it happening to 1 sti, and he was on the track.

My paint is chipping off pretty bad on the rears, the fronts look OK, but they are getting sent to the Powder Coater tomorrow...., As long as the temperature is low it doesnt affect the rims much at all.
