Default Installed ARP Extended Studs Through ABS Sensor Port

Ha! I did it. What a PITA!!!

I did it by grinding the ABS sensor port out with a die grinder and a carbide bit till I could pass it though. I would grind...check for clearance...grind check for clearance...repeat repeat. It was a major PITA though. Took me two hours to do one side...granted im sure I can do the other side in less time. The ABS sensor still mounts fine and is in the correct position against that metal thing-a-ma-jiggie (feel free to tell me what it is called...looks like a serrated plate).

Now I cant recommend that anyone else do this untill I get the car back on the ground and make sure everything is OK with the ABS sensor...so consider me the guinne pig....but really I cant see how it couldnt be fine. Ill take some pictures when I have some daylight. If everything is OK I guess I will have to write up a better DIY proceedure as this is potentially huge for all the people who need long extended studs and dont feel like cutting into the dust shield or removing the f'ing bearings.

Thanks im extremely proud of myself...

My smile will evaporate if I get in my car and the ABS light comes on though. It wont...I hope...at least im 99.9% positive that the sensor will be fine.

Ive got 275/40's I fit for track use. I was already using a 5mm spacer out back, which is iffy as it is. Now I have coilovers and clearance at all 4 corners is going to be an issue, I may need 8mm spacers now and that is certanly a no-go on stock studs.

Does the sensor still center itself in the hole? That was my main worry when I thought about doing that.

I'll be interested to see if there are problems.

Waiting to see the outcome...I've been holding off on doing this because I didn't want to deal with the rears but if it's that easy I may just give in.

Good deal. Mr. Plastic Fantastic rides again!

You do know that you can just knock off the side of the studs' flanges, right?

or install them on a new set of 5x114.3 hubs...

but I have heard of people grinding down the flange for it to fit through the abs hole.

Is that safe to do?

The flange is pretty deep. Grinding it leaves the majority of it intact.

I have been told that ground studs have lasted many track sessions on race rubber and lots of on/off of the wheels.

It is not the best solution, but easier that disassembling the hub. The OP's idea would be more ideal, assuming the abs is not sacrificed.

Yeah it still centers itself inside the hole and seems to be in the same position to meet up with the "tone wheel". I did have to hold the sensor in place when tightening the bolt that holds it, as it would want to pull to the one side of the ABS hole where I ground a bunch. But once the bolt was tight I wiggled the sensor and it didn’t budge.

With all of that said, if the sensor does move some I have some nifty tricks up my sleeve for adding material back. Most of the people here might have trouble doing it, but it involves adding a thixotropic two-component polyurethane or polyurea to add material back. Granted you could use something like JB weld or an equivalent.
