Well, should be picking up my WRB this week sometime but I had a question.

During the test drive, I heard a whine coming from the rear end. The car I test drove isn’t the same car I’m interested in and am planning on test driving my particular car later this week. Could this whine be tire noise or…could it be a problem with the rear end?

Thanks in advance.

I complained about a rear end noise (from the car I mean) the same day I picked up my 05 STI. The service manager went on a ride with me and he heard the noise too. The most experienced tech put it on the lift and checked it over and said it was tire noise. He's probably right because it hasn't gotten worse after 1600 miles. I think it's a natural element of the car, not a sign something is broke.

FWIW, the stock tires are sticky, but also hideously noisy. They may well be the loudest car tire I've ever heard.

Couple the loud tire with a lack of sound insulation and you'll understand. You get used to the tire noise and learn to turn the stereo up. The stereo also helps drown out the creaks and moans from the dashboard.

But none of us bought this car for it's quietness and luxury. And with the windows down at 100+ MPH, you can't hear any of it.
