IWSTI Addict since: Jan 2007 Trader Rating: (0) | Hey guys, I am just trying to scope out my options here. I'm from socal, so dont have much experience with winter driving, but I am going to go up to big bear in a couple weeks and my friends and I currently trying to decide who is driving etc. i have only heard wonders about our cars and snow, so i really wanna drive, but need some advice first I am currently on my re070s and I know I should not drive up in those --- granted that it snows that weekend. (if it doesnt snow then this thread might be useless lol) so what are my other options. it is not worth it for me to buy winter wheel/tire package. can i put chains on my car? --i figure i'll rent them since its a one time deal --if so, do they have to go on all four wheels? or do you think i can explore the option of possibly trading someone for their winter wheels/tires for a weekend? with the knowledge that over half the driving to big bear will be dry (maybe wet)highway driving me driving may not be a viable option at all, but i really want to deep down inside so just checking . any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks. IWSTI Addict since: Aug 2004 Trader Rating: (8) | I ended up buying a set for dedicated snow tires/wheels for boarding trips. But if you want snow chains for low profile wheels I went with these: SCC Super Z-6 for Sale Online - Vulcan Tire Sales I haven't used them yet because I have the snow tires but I bought them for the just in case situations when they demand chains even if you have AWD AND Snow tires. I haven't run into that kind of situation before. As far as driving in the snow the car is very very capable but the RE070s will not do you any good. Renting chains "can" be an option but you might (or are) going to ruin the BBSs. On another note, driving in snow is another animal that you have to get used to so start out slow and use a bit of caution. If I were in you situation I'd try to hitch a ride with someone because with the current precipitation in SoCal a patch of black ice might ruin your day. |

| Senior STI Driver | I drove with my re070's in the VA mountain winter last year up a school without much issue. There was about 6in of snow, car did great going through it. Not sure how it would go through with more snow than that though. Pick up a set of Blizzaks, there great tires for snow. You can normally find someone selling a used pair for around 400 which isnt to bad. I cant wait for winter this year |

i am assuming my best option is to see if anyone would be willing to swap wheels/tires for a weekend..i would even be willing to "rent" from someone. maybe i'll post something in the socal forums and feel that option out a bit. thanks for your help guys, but i also did some more research (which i should have done before posting this lol NOOOOOB) and i guess unless i have snow tires, chains aren't really worth it (i dont wanna scuff up my BBSs either) in any case, if anyone else has anything to add, im open for more discussion (as is this thread ) | |

| Amateur STI Driver | yea, i was worry about the same issue... I decided to buy a whole new set since I know that i am going to go up to tahoe probably at least 3-4 times a year, it is a better investment for me to just get a whole set.. plus I can just use my stock wheels for a dedicated track wheels.. =D |
