Default Travel Dilemma. NY to FL + winter = Which tires?

Hey guys, I have a bit of an issue. I am traveling from NY to FL and back for a vacation in February. I have been thinking ahead and I am wondering what tires to run. Right now I am on my Snow tires for the winters in NY. I planned on getting a set of Azenis 615 for the summer. I also have my old Toyo Proxes 4 on my 2nd set of rims, but they are down to the wear bars.

So my question Which set do you think I should run? There is a possibility of snow from NY to about VA.

Obviously running into snow on the Azenis would mean trouble. Also running the snows in the heat could be a cause for wearing. So any thoughts are welcome!

Run the snows, or buy good all-seasons.

there aren't any good turns in florida anyway.

the only time you'll be sad you were on AS would be if someone the mountains in TN weren't covered in snow.

but you'll most likely be in sub 50 degree temps until you get to the jacksonville area.

where in FL are you going?

I want to avoid buying all seasons again. I ran them all last year. They were alright in the summer and terrible in the snow. This year I have the snows on for winter and want my summer grip back. Hence the plan for the 615s

Orlando to Disney for a week.

I thought the same as far as the turns. Most will be straight highway and any turns will be in PA on some back roads.

It sounds like snows will be the best option. The car will be sitting for most of the week in the parking lot anyway.

The,

Arent you somewhere in St Petersburg? IIRC Edit: der, it is in your sig..NVM

the snows will be fine, and you'll thank yourself when you hit a freak snow storm.

what route you taking? highway 127 through TN is a fun route, Signal Mountain is fun

if you're taking 95 it'll be insanely boring. (either way Georgia sucks, and so does FL (driving wise)).

I'm in South Florida, about 4hrs away from Orlando. I may be in the area in Feb though for Work. (main office is in Orlando).

Which snow tires do you have? Some are better able to handle warmer temps than others.

Regardless, I wouldn't want to be on 615s in even a light dusting of snow.

This will me the umpteenth time I have been to FL. And the 4th time I have driven down on my own (girlfriend will also be with me). I havent finalized a route yet. I have done the 95 thing, also 81 to 95 to switch things up. I cant remember the route I took when I went to Panama City a few years ago. It was through the hill billies though. Interested people out there. (no offense to anyone that is reading this )

I am on Mastcraft Glacier Grip 2s. They're badass in the snow, but a bit squirmy above 40-45 deg. They ride just fine on the highway, but I wont push them in turns at all because of the squirmyness in general in the dry.

I think I am just going to stick to the snows as the clap said. Any freak snow or bad weather in general, I will be better off. Especially with the GF driving now and then as she hates snow. Not that I will let her drive much anyway hehe!

we usually come down 75 through atlanta - Florida turnpike.

then again we're coming from Iowa or Kentucky usually so that makes sense.

Michelin Alpin PA2's, great in both. You'll love them.

You might want to check out the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina...some mighty fine bed and breakfasts in Asheville.

I hear you re the winter tire wear. That is certainly an issue. Be glad you don't have studs in the equation.

You've got to think in terms of the big picture. I try to preserve my winter tires at all costs, because next to race tires, they fall off the fastest. A marginal winter tire is fine for thrashing around on the street during the dry summer months, but even a 70% winter tire loses traction on snow and ice - particularly if it's not studded.

Work backwards. When are you going to retire the winter tires? Will they be far enough off to demote to off-season use after this winter anyway? If so, it might make sense to just do the trip on them. OTOH, if they are pristine, and you're just going to be cruising down I95 to FL, it might pay to invest in a set of all-seasons now.

I try to group my tires (and wheels) by application, and minimize the amount of time driving on the wrong stuff... = maximize the specificity of the application. You end up with lots of tires, but in the long run you get more wear out of them. I do have the advantage of living in a desert with little in the way of legal restriction though, so I can drive around town on just about any thrashed-out crap in the summer.

I lived in NY/MD/PA/CT until I was 27, so I know how your conditions are. Good thing you don't have a lot of Z-axis action to deal with. Altitude makes this stuff way more complicated.

Have a good trip.

Nicest travel tires I've had on my STi were Continental Contact Extremes. Very nice ride, quiet, good in snow, great in rain... put a bunch a air in 'em and their decent on the dry. Hands down, best travel tire of choice!

Thanks for the response. I am sticking with my snow tires for the trip. It's not worth it to put the summers in and have the possibility of hitting a snow storm or any snow for that matter on the way down or back.

I do not want all-seasons again. I am def getting some Falken Azenis this spring.
