Default Re: Protune at MZM?

Thanks for all the help!! It did end up being the same plug and pin as the 05's. Although none of the plugs looked the same as the 05's diagram, they did match the 06 WRX.

I finally got a RPM signal!! I took her out for a test run and it sprayed beautifully onto my windshield for about 5-6 seconds and I backed off. I ran it up the second time and got NO FLOW!! It tripped my failsafe, cel, flashing cruise, and my wavering tone speaker again!! I pulled over to check the lines and for leaks and found that it blew off the fitting right out of the solenoid.

Murphy's law always has a strong grip on me, I had suspected that fitting as it felt that it was a little stripped already from the factory. So I already planned to keep an eye on it, but didn't expect it to blow out. Coolingmist said they are on backorder, and gave me a site for a suitable sub, but I think I should be able to re-tap it and put a helical thread in to make it better. The solenoid is all-plastic, so the new metal threads in theory should make it better than original I'm hopping!!

MZM recommended I throw in a set of 1 step colder plugs, and grab a recirc kit for the HKS SSQV. I hope to have the recirc kit and plugs by this weekend to install. Then I have to fix the solenoid, and still have to tap the intercooler for the meth nozzle and check for leaks and hope against all hopes nothing else goes wrong before next Friday......yea right.

What's your thoughts on the solenoid?? Should I re-tap it? Should I pick up a suitable sub? Or both?

Thanks for the suggestion sti_kris!! I checked out their website and I'd go there and play even if I didn't have my son with me!!

I'm just a big ol kid at heart

We'll definitely be going there no doubt. Every time I travel with the kids near a Putt Putt I always take them and they quite enjoy it, and that place looks like it puts Putt Putt to shame.

Well, I already had a new solenoid on order about 30 seconds after my last above post. I decided to track down the right size helical insert (which is proving difficult) and tap new threads on both ports on the meth solenoid so they will have metal threads instead of the cheapo plastic ones. In theory, it should hold up to pressure and leaks better and longer, but I'll have a back up "just in case" when I get there for the tune. I got the one step colder plugs on order, and just received the fitting for the recirc of my BOV. Sounds like I have a busy weekend ahead of me as I decided to take the last 2 weekends at work so I make sure I have Thursday and Friday to get there for the tune, and the weekend to travel back and relax before the grind resumes the following Monday.

You guys are super great!! That's why I've always had much love for lurking through the IWSTI and COBB forums. I will definitely post up results before and after, and all impressions. I'll have plenty of driving time between Austin and Amarillo to get some good impressions of the tune. I may get some "extra" time this weekend to post up some schematics of my fail safe, and maybe I'll have time to make some to show how to make a DIY one for people without one. Coolingmist asked me to email what I did as they don't have anything for their customers, so I did a lot of reading and tracing wires through schematics to come up with a very easy and simple way of wiring it. And it's proven very effective so far.

Default Re: Protune at MZM?

Decided to throw an update on my progress. Wife got off work, so she'll be going with me to yell at me for all the money I'm spending .

I have completed the install finally between spare time. I have to fix my fail-safe speaker and tap it to another signal. Anytime I go above 3,000RPM (spray start requirement) and I'm not at the boost requirement the check valve somehow "know's " one requirement is met but not flowing and sends a signal to the vari-safe unit. I think I'll tap the fail-safe l.e.d. that I still have to finish. I've fiberglassed a small "display" that I'm drilling l.e.d.'s in. I'll have one to show sys pwr, meth flow, fail and IC spray. I'll also use the vari-safe controller for a boost activated intercooler sprayer as well, but that project will have to wait.

I think though I made a pretty big boo boo. I kinda took the instructions a little too literal in the manual. It said to install the nozzle between the intercooler and throttle body. Ummmm, I placed it in the pipe coming out of the TMIC. Well, needless to say that the coupler barely goes over the lip of the intercooler pipe. I clamped it down pretty good and hoped for the best, and it held boost just fine today. I think in the long run I'm going to have to take it to a shop and have them weld the hole smooth and install the nozzle on the flat part of the underside of the intercooler.

How badly did I screw myself? Who know's, but I don't think I have time to work out a better solution right now. I have to leave for MZM Thursday morning.

Although, maybe a quick fix might work? What if I relocated the nozzle and just left the hole for now? It would be covered by the coupler and shouldn't disrupt the air flow too much (at least not anymore than the nozzle does??). What do you guys think?

Edit: I realize I had a momentary lapse of reason......maybe even a retard lapse of reason, so please keep the flaming of my idiocricy to a minimum.

Well at least you didn't install it in the pipe off the turbo like I did at first. I dunno what I was thinking!

Yea, I lack the ability of common sense sometimes. How did you repair the hole, or did you just leave it? I went ahead and tapped it in the right place and left the hole in the outlet pipe of the intercooler. The silicon coupler covers it, and it's clamped good so I don't think it's hurting anything. My nozzle was bubbling while on the dyno, and I need a good way to fix it. I was thinking some silicon might seal it better. Although due to the leaking nozzle, and my CAT going bad in my downpipe, I didn't get tuned on meth. The tuner said that my exhaust was so restrictive that he could barely put down COBB stg 2 numbers, but I was still off by about 15-20hp from the lowest COBB stg 2 he's seen on his dyno.

That's what I get for buying a cheap DP. Although in my own defense it never stated that it was catted. So all this time I thought it was a resonator!! It's either very very inefficient, or it's broken down, but at any rate he said I need to throw a good one in there, or straight pipe. I'll post my plots over the weekend when time alots, and have been putting it off since the whole trip was kind of a waste, and the numbers were so disappointing. My first pull was actually less than what a STOCK STI puts down!! How crazy is that!!
