my local inspection place will give me grief if they don't see a bulge for a cat.

Ive been using the search button for a while. a catless DP with stock exhaust can yeild overboost CEL, it can be protuned for best results.

a true Catless DP with full TBE, will always have boost creep issues, and a wastegate port will reduce the risk of boost creep, but not eliminate it. porting the wastegate is not an easy task from what ive read, and often guys overdue it, and leads to boost issues.

Often what leads to catless is cost... so guys often save the 200 bucks, and use it elsewhere. now, will it make more power, yes, but again... is the gain worth it? im still desiding.

the smell debate is only valid if there is no Protune. often a protune reduces the risk of smell, and its often mild.

now loudness. apparently its deeper and raspyer. ive yet to find a good video showing the comparison of catless to catted sound.

I ran invidia catless DP w/ stock cbe with the stage 2 ots v1.01 map and didn't throw any cells. I would suggest going catless with an exhaust and protune.

Then my car must be an anomaly then. I'm catless with full TBE and I don't have any boost creep issues. When me and my tuner were testing my set up we took it on the freeway and put it in 6th gear at 2000rpm. Then I floored it while riding the brakes to load the turbo as much as possible and boost didn't spike much higher that the target.

i thought this quote was interesting:

Said by patr (member #97) on NASIAC (main tuner at Rocket Rally in Squamish, BC, and racing for Subaru Canada)

This is not specific to this thread as i jacked it from another thread.

Quote:
Hey man, is that based on first hand knowledge ? The above is a general recommendation to minimize support calls since you cannot run a catless TBE without boost creep, which is true for ALL STIs with any sort of decent TBE, since 2004. That's right, all STis since 2004. Boost creep will occur regardless of weather you have a protune or not, or stage 1 or stage 2, its NOT ECU dependent. In fact, based on the same reason, you cannot run ANY engine management with a catless DP. At all ! But many people run successfully with catless DPs... so how ? It must be magic ! We all know its been done many times, and it is possible. So a general recommendation like the above is not technically valid, specifically in this case.

There are multiple factors involved, but you *can* run a catless DP on many STis depending on the rest of the exhaust and a few other circumstances. You were never able to run a catless TBE on *any* STi using any sort of Cobb OTS map, regardless of what any website may, or may not say, stage 1, or stage 2, or stage anything.
This thread is for an 08 STI
Impressions : 08STI w/ Cobb Accessport and RR catless DP. - NASIOC

I had to follow someone with a catless exhaust for about 20 minutes and let me tell you, by the time was able to pull around him, I felt like ramming him into a ditch. I had the worst headache after that (some old Talon with melon shooter and catless exhaust).

Honestly, if it's your daily driver and unless you're going to make BIG power, then you should go with a catted exhaust. The 5-10whp you might leave on the table is nothing and can be picked up in other ways.

I wouldn't want to follow my 02 either. That crap reeks! I got the exhaust for cheap though. I'll do a catted down pipe on my 08 STi.

Maybe I am wrong and you guys can help, but I thought the biggest advantage of the catless DP is tha it spools faster and is a must if your planning big power, something over 400whp.

I ran catted and later catless on my 05. It definately felt like it spooled quicker without the cat. If you run catted, then you'll pay $200-$300 more for less power. Personally, I would rather have more power and pay less for it, but to each his own. If you like making less power and paying $200+ for it, then you should look into a BOV too.

If only it was that cut and dry. You have to take into account the penalty of getting caught without a cat, the annoyance of having to swap back to a cat to get inspected, the smell, the karma effect (of adding to world pollution), and the peace of mind of not throwing codes. And for a $200 investment and only a couple hp loss it doesnt seem so bad now.
