I just took some pics. Will get them up today or tomorrow. It's basically the Element tuning setup with locally sourced parts.

that catch can with the filter--i would be concerned about that--since it vents that must upset the air fuel correction..

Not at all. It is separating the oil from the air out of the oily mist that comes from the crank case. None of the air that is in that mist is metered air.

Basically, we have done away with the PCV system...it's worthless anyway. The two valve covers are tied together via the pipes on the IC, then run to the AO separator. Where the PCV used to be there is now just a hose that runs to the separator.

We have done away with any of that oily mist being plumbed back into the intake track. The oil gets into the cumbustion chamber and will lower the octane of the fuel being used which can cause detonation.

Right now the system is just catching the oil. We want to evaluate the oil before we decide whether or not to plumb it back into the crankcase for further use. If we do, we thinking we could T off the drain tube for the turbo and have it drain through there. The person we have been working with on this kit's development is already doing that and it appears to be working fine.

Yeah. We just take the little pins out from the white part. Insert them in the gray plug then tape it up. Keeps the CEL from coming on and since the thing doesn't do anything...no harm done.

Thumbs up Re: Another dead piston!!!

i have been venting my crankcase to atmosphere for 3 years. I/C is bone dry and no cel or any other issues i can think of. well occasionally i feel a small twinge of guilt but it is quickly crushed under the onslaught of subie's man torque. Mcloven it!
clint i am very interested in how things workout we have been holding off on a new sti for weeks now till this has some type of resolution. i sent a e-mail to corporate and John Mergen replied that " no known US sti had experenced a issue" "other markets have had a few issues" and " in the interest of product confidence we will institute a stop-sale till we are satisfied the problems are rectified this includes a re-flash to the ECU which at this point i can not speak on the details of." there were a lot of other words but my eyes glazed over. great going guys keep wailing on her and keep us up to date.

No interference meant on my part, but Crawford states that a tune must be done when using their catch can. My buddy carlos already discussed this on these forums. The tuner panicked when he saw the fuel trims idling. Many calls to crawford resulted in MR. crawford himself stating the car MUST be tuned for the Air/Oil seperator. Same for Element and the same for elements knockoff(the original). It removes the pcv valve whick upsets the fuel trims. Vacuum goes somewhere. Less/more of it requires tweaking. Again, not trying to hijack, just a heads up.

We probably didn't notice it much before because we didn't really beat on it on the street. Since putting the pistons in we've been flogging it to see if it's going to pop again.

So, anyway, the motor has been running great. We dropped a new clutch into it today (Tony is leaving for test spin now).

We also rigged up a A/O separator that went in quite nicely.

We needed to get those done and the car rolling well as we're heading up to the Subaru Challenge event at the plant on Saturday, and we REALLY want to run this car.

So, in all of this we really took at hard look at the Subaru PCV system. From looking at how it works, and that it pretty much just vents ALL the time we think the stock setup sucks. In fact, we think it sucks so bad that all we can figure is that the engineer who designed the thing must have been stoned at the time.

So we ran a test....

Yep, must have been really stoned as this stupid thing doesn't do anything right!

OMFG.. that pics is hilarious!

just a quick reply should have explained it better, the pvc is not removed on mine, just venting from head covers, which of course are common air space with the crank case, the intake is completely isolated so no unmetered air enters. once a vacuum is established by the pvc to the case there is no more "air" to pull, except of course blowby. come to think of it that probably costs me a couple of hp with pumping loses by being at ATM and not vacuum.

I just went out and logged the car and saw fuel trims +/- 5% from target which is fine and right where they were when last tuned. Looks perfectly normal.

We had a catch can with a breather on it mounted in that location a few years back on our Silver wide body car. It didn’t stay there too long as the car caught on fire from the oil mist and the red hot turbo
