| STI Driver | I wouldn't recommend it. Do you really want to try something like this on a new $35K car? The engine is designed to run on unleaded gasoline only so there's no guarantee that an additive won't cause damage. |

IWSTI Addict since: Mar 2008 Trader Rating: (0) | well, most people use toluene, used in the correct proportions, it is perfectly safe. reason it is bad when used in too high concentrations, is 1. it has no lubricants, and 2. it has been known to swell rubber gaskets. #2 is a non-issue now I believe because the newer gaskets are immune. Toluene is 114 octane, so adding just a little can really boost levels. Much better than using over the counter octane boosters which only raise 0.1 points. |

| STI Driver | Weren't people using the toluene to up the octane level for more power/better knock deterent? I'm guessing the acetone does the same thing. It sounds like the OP is just interested in getting better fuel economy. Does higher octane = better fuel economy? I'm not sure of the answer but from my exerience it may a little. I run 91 in the winter and get roughly 18-19 mpg. In the summer I run roughly 94-95 octane (mix of 91 and 100 VP) and get roughly 19-20 mpg. One thing to consider, I think the winter 91 is worse than the summer due to additives so that could account for the better mileage in the summer. I'm not sure if a potential 1-2 mpg increase is worth the hassle. |

| STI Driver | ^^^Ah, that makes sense. I was just reading some of the info from the acetone link and it says if you mix to much of it with gasoline it will raise the octane level to a point that fuel economy will actually decrease. |

IWSTI Addict since: May 2008 Trader Rating: (0) | We all know this, but this is a fun car to drive and not driving it a little bit on the aggressive side it think is pointless of having an STi. Now if we can have fun driving and still save some bucks on fuel then I think it will be great. Never really seen some good fuel savings after I installed a high flow filter (K$N) and a catback (madnaflow). |

IWSTI Addict since: May 2008 Trader Rating: (0) | One said I bought a car I could not afford other said go get a Prius. ![]() But the fact is money is always and issue no matter what. It's just that I still remember when driving 200 miles to buy a coral from NJ to CT was not a big deal for me gas wise. But know I have to think twice if I just wanna drive for fun or just stay at home and wax the car . I'm not like the two above who has a lot of money. I think there is nothing wrong in looking for some safe alternative (if it is even safe) that's why we are talking about here.I have a budget and a family to take care of. Bottom line I'm not rich. |
